Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Tamil Nadu & Puducherry Sunil Mathur, IRS unfurled the National Flag and felicitated the best performers in direct tax collection here on Friday to mark the 75th Republic Day.
It was celebrated at Wanaparthy Block, Income Tax Office Campus, No 121, Mahatma Gandhi Road, Nungambakkam, Chennai-600034. Jayanthi Krishnan, IRS, Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax; DN Kar, IRS, Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax and Veterans of the Income Tax Department, Senior Officers, Officials and family members of the Income Tax fraternity graced the occasion.

Sunil Mathur, Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, TN & P said, “We must be grateful to our forefathers for a comprehensive Constitution which has stood the test of time for so long. Many of the Constitutions all over the world, were rigid, but our Constitution is flexible, to make amendments to suit the progress in humankind and technological advancement.”
He exhorted the colleagues to uphold the Constitution and the rule of law and to work hard for the progress of the nation.
Further he stated that, the Income Tax Department plays an important role in the development of the country by collecting about 54% of the tax revenue of the Central Government. He informed that in the current year, the overall direct tax collection target of the nation is fixed at Rs 18.2 lakh crore, which is a very substantial amount used for development and security of our nation. He further stated that the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry region is a major contributor to the government collection and stands 4th in the country. This year Tamil Nadu & Puducherry region has been given a collection target of Rs 1.17 lakh crore which is about 6.5 to 7% of the overall target of the country. He requested the officers and officials of the Department to work hard for achieving the target fixed for the TN & P region.

As part of the celebration, a cultural programme was performed by the Indian Classical Singer Sikkil C Gurucharan and his team with soulful rendition of patriotic songs. Talented singers from the Income Tax Department also rendered patriotic songs during the occasion.
On this occasion, Sunil Mathur, Principal CCIT, TN&P felicitated the Officers and Officials by awarding them ‘Principal CCIT’s Distinguished Service Award’ for their outstanding contribution in the field of Direct Tax Administration in the region of TN & P.
On this occasion, as part of Swachhta Campaign, Sunil Mathur, inaugurated “Poonthalir’, a park for children in the campus at Nungambakkam, Chennai and distributed gifts to the children who took part in the event.
