Tamil Nadu government will constitute an Economic Advisory Council to the Chief Minister, first of its kind in the nation said Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Monday.
In his 48 page address (lasted for abour 1 hour 41 minuts and 49 seconds) after inaugurating the first session of the 16th assembly at the multi-purpose hall of the Kalaivanar Arangam, the Governor said the government would constitute a council consist of Nobel laureate Esther Duflo of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), former Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan
The newly-elected Tamil Nadu state government will constitute an “Economic advisory council to the chief minister” with leading economic experts from all over the world as its members, said Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Monday.
The Governor Banwarilal Purohit said the council would consist of Nobel laureate Esther Duflo of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, former Reserve Bank of India governor Raghuram Rajan, former chief economic advisor to the central government Dr Arvind Subramanian, development economist Jean Dreze and former Union finance secretary Dr S Narayan.

“Based on the recommendations of this council, the government will revitalise the state’s economy and ensure that the benefits of economic growth reach all segments of society,” the Governor said.
Purohit said, the government will take necessary steps towards bringing down the overall debt burden and improving fiscal position of the state. Prelude this, a white paper detailing the true state of the State’s finances would be released in July so that the people were fully informed.
Separate budget for agriculture
Purohit also announced the government’s decision to introduce an exclusive annual budget for agriculture sector with the objective of increasing productivity and protecting farmers’ welfare.
“The government will take all steps to achieve the target of 125 metric tonnes of food production in 2021-22,” he said, adding that water for Kuruvai cultivation had already been released by the Chief Minister from Stanley reservoir in Mettur and other water bodies across the state.

The government would protect the interests of the fishing community and take up the issue of retrieval of Katchatheevu with the Centre
He said as the medical experts had warned of a third wave of COVID-19, the government would take all necessary measures to counter it.
Priority in govt recruitments for Tamil-medium students
The government also intended to give priority to Tamil-medium and government school students in government recruitments, the Governor said requisite changes to undo past orders which were contrary to this intent would be undertaken at the earliest.
Purohit also urged the Centre to ensure that people from Tamil Nadu were given priority in appointments in Central government jobs in Tamil Nadu etc.
