CHENNAI, DEC 16
The Chennai city police are planning to crack down on women drunken drivers in the city. The move apparently taken by the city police after it had received complaints that woman drunken drivers were not stopped by male traffic police on busy roads.
A top official said that, the city police are mulling to form a special woman traffic police squad and they would be deployed in the city to crackdown on women driving under the influence of alcohol.
The special squads will be headed by a woman sub-inspector, a head constable and two woman constables. At present, less than 100 woman police are on duty with Greater Chennai Traffic Police.
Despite knowing that many woman drivers return from pubs in an inebriated condition, traffic policemen say they cannot stop them during routine check.
At many instances, even if male traffic police personnel stop and ask woman drivers to undergo breath analyser test, they either refuse to blow or argue that they are not drunk. Forming a special squad will help women to air their grievances, the official said.
