NE NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDABAD, NOV 23

In a significant welfare step for the media fraternity, the Government of Tripura has abolished the upper annual income limit of ₹3 lakh for availing the state’s journalists’ pension. The decision follows consistent representations by the Tripura Working Journalists’ Association (TWJA), which described the move as “a progressive and sensitive gesture towards the press community”.

According to a press statement issued by Bijoy Paul, President of the TWJA, the state cabinet has approved that any journalist who has completed 25 years in the profession, or has served as an accredited journalist for at least 10 years, will now be eligible for the pension—irrespective of current income.

Presently, journalists in Tripura receive ₹10,000 per month after attaining the age of 60. The TWJA has also urged the government to enhance this amount to reflect rising living costs and to ensure dignified post-retirement support.

The Association expressed its “deep gratitude” to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who also holds the Information & Cultural Affairs (ICA) portfolio, for “responding promptly and positively” to the long-standing demand.

Terming the decision historic, the TWJA said it “reaffirms the government’s commitment to strengthening the fourth pillar of democracy by ensuring social security for journalists who have dedicated their lives to public service”.
