TVK reshapes Tamil Nadu future: Actor-leader declared CM face, Karur stampede framed as conspiracy

R ARIVANANTHAM
CHENNAI, NOV 5

In his first major public appearance since the tragic 2025 Karur crowd crush that claimed 41 lives, actor-turned-politician Vijay led the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) at a Special General Council meeting on Wednesday at a luxury resort near Mamallapuram. The gathering not only marked his return to the political limelight, but also formalised his ask to lead the party’s 2026 electoral push.

According to a resolution adopted by the party, Vijay has been empowered to make decisions on alliance strategy and has been named the official Chief Ministerial candidate for the Tamil Nadu 2026 Assembly elections — a significant elevation of his political role.

  • Special General Council adopts 12 resolutions, gives Vijay full alliance authority and fuses welfare agenda with power bid
  • From tragedy to political springboard — TVK targets 2026 with strong stance on women’s safety, farmers, and electoral fairness

“The people’s support for Vijay had become an irritant for those in power… the crowd crush at Karur was a conspiracy and an unimaginable tragedy,” read the resolution adopted by the party in memory of the victims of the Karur incident.

Key Highlights from the Council

  • The first of the 12 resolutions addressed the Karur tragedy, condemning it as “a conspiracy” and mourned the victims as “martyrs.”
  • It explicitly alleged that the incident and ensuing security lapses were engineered due to the ruling party’s frustration at Vijay’s rising influence.
  • On alliances, TVK reaffirmed its independent stance. Despite overtures from the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the party held firm that “our stand on alliances remains unchanged”.
  • Resolutions ranged widely across issue areas: halting the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, demanding women’s safety following high-profile gang-rape cases, pressing for compensation to delta-region paddy farmers who lost crops amid heavy rain, and advocating for Tamil fishermen detained by the Sri Lankan navy.

Political Significance & Road Ahead

With the institutional backing of authorised decision-making and candidate status, Vijay’s TVK is signalling full throttle entry into the 2026 race. The overlay of the Karur crisis has shifted the narrative: from tragedy to rallying cry for greater accountability, safety and leadership change.

TVK’s organisational reform — including a freshly minted 28-member executive committee to oversee day-to-day operations — underscores the party’s transition from celebrity-led movement to serious political contender.

As Vijay and his party attempt to channel the Karur ripple into electoral momentum, they leave little ambiguity: “We will move forward with greater determination, discipline and commitment to serve the people,” Vijay declared, describing the tragedy as “a temporary hurdle”.

With Tamil Nadu’s political fault-lines already shifting, the TVK’s bold positioning adds new variables to the equation — and sets the stage for a potentially dramatic contest in 2026.
