Southern Railway gets a seasoned hand at the helm as U. Subba Rao, an officer with a proven record in railway production, workshops and operations, took charge as its General Manager on Saturday. His elevation brings to the zone a leadership profile forged across major divisions, production units and high-impact mechanical engineering assignments.

Subba Rao, a 1987-batch Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineering (IRSME) officer, moves to the top post at Southern Railway after serving as General Manager of Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, one of Indian Railways’ premier production units.

His new assignment also marks a return to a railway zone where he previously served as Divisional Railway Manager of Salem Division, giving him familiarity with the operational and administrative challenges of Southern Railway.
From Salem to the Southern Railway headquarters
Before heading ICF, Subba Rao served as Additional General Manager and Principal Chief Mechanical Engineer of South Western Railway at Hubballi. His earlier assignments include Chief Mechanical Engineer (Planning), South Central Railway, Secunderabad; Chief Workshop Manager, Coaching Workshop, Mysuru; and Chief Workshop Engineer, Rail Wheel Factory, Bengaluru.
His career has been marked by an emphasis on innovation, production efficiency and operational excellence. At the Rail Wheel Factory, Bengaluru, he played a pivotal role in achieving a record production of two lakh wheels in a single year during FY 2011-12.
ICF leadership wins national recognition
Subba Rao’s tenure at ICF was equally significant, with the Chennai-based production unit securing several prestigious national recognitions under his leadership.
These included the Best Production Unit Shield of Indian Railways, Change Maker Award, CII National Award, Star Performer Award and National Energy Conservation Award for Innovation.
His experience at ICF is particularly relevant as Southern Railway continues to navigate the demands of modernisation, capacity enhancement, safety, passenger services and technology-driven operations.
Global exposure, policy expertise
A Mechanical Engineering graduate, Subba Rao also holds a Postgraduate Degree in Public Policy & Management from IIM Bengaluru. His professional development includes advanced executive training through the Senior Managers’ Programme in Paris and Johannesburg.
He was also associated with the validation of EMU Cast Wheels Design at the Transportation Technology Center, Inc. (TTCI), USA, adding international technical exposure to his extensive Indian Railways experience.
A second-generation railway officer
Subba Rao comes from a family with a strong railway legacy. He is a second-generation Railway officer, following in the footsteps of his father, U. Narasimha Rao, who retired as Chief Planning and Design Engineer of South Central Railway.
He succeeds R.N. Singh, who superannuated on July 31, 2026.
With a blend of production expertise, field experience, policy training and a record of innovation, Subba Rao assumes charge at a crucial juncture for Southern Railway, with his previous experience in Salem and ICF likely to add a strong operational and manufacturing perspective to the zone’s leadership.
