Tamil Nadu Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare Udhayanidhi Stalin on Monday felicitated two of India’s finest young Grandmasters from Singara Chennai – Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu and D Gukesh at their alma mater Velammal Nexus, with a cash award of Rs 20 lakh each for their recent accomplishments. The Sports Minister also extended his support to all sportspersons from the state.
Gukesh, 17, became India No. 1 in FIDE rating list recently, displacing the former five-time World champion Viswanathan Anand who was country’s top-ranked player in the world since July 1986. Pragg, 18, as he is fondly called, bagged silver medal at the World Cup held in Baku, Azerbaijan, losing to Magnus Carlsen in the final.

The event recognized the stellar performances of their students, World Chess Championship Runner-up Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu, World No. 8 and India’s No. 1 chess player D Gukesh, the Gold and Bronze medalists of the World School Chess Championship, Asia’s No.2 Tennis Player Haritha Sree and Chess Coach Velavan.
Velammal Nexus also gave away Rs 10 lakh and Rs five lakh, respectively, to the players who were part of the Velammal MHSS school teams that won the gold (U-12) and bronze (U-18), medals, respectively, in the World schools team chess championships in Aktau (Kazakhstan). S Velavan, Velammal’s chess coach at the World schools championships, was given Rs 3 lakh.
V Haritha Shree was given Rs 2 lakh for becoming Asian U-14 girls’ No. 2, according to the Asian Tennis Federation rankings.
This momentous occasion was graced by PK Sekar Babu, Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments, and the legendary Padma Vibhushan Viswanathan Anand. The event was presided over by the Correspondent of Velammal Educational Trust, MVM Velmohan.
