Union Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Dr L Murugan has requested  External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar to take steps to secure immediate release of 23 fishermen from Tamil Nadu and their boats from the custody of Sri Lankan Navy, says a release.

In his letter, Dr L Murugan said on Friday he received a memorandum from 66 fishermen villages of  Nagapattinam, Karaikal and Mayiladuthurai, apprising him the matter of detention or arrest of 23 fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy and seeking their immediate release.

He requested External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar’s urgent help for safe and timely release of 23 fishermen along with two boats.

Dr L Murugan also assured the delegation for all possible help from his side for early release of fishermen.

Meanwhile, Dr Murugan paid a courtesy visit to Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi at Raj Bhavan in Chennai on Friday.
