Union Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt on Friday inaugurated a jetty of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) in the Vadinar area of Jamnagar, Gujarat.
With this, the Indian Coast Guard has significantly strengthened its presence in the Gulf of Kutch, a critical node in India’s crude oil infrastructure.

This marks a significant step towards augmenting infrastructure development in the strategically important Indian Coast Guard Region (North-West). The jetty construction was undertaken by Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) as a deposit work at a cost of Rs 74 Crores. The MoS lauded the role played by the ICG, in safeguarding national maritime interests in its areas of responsibility.
The Vadinar jetty, heralded as a major technological leap, is poised to bolster India’s readiness against security threats in the Gulf of Kutch. This 175-metre-long facility not only facilitates the deployment of larger Indian Coast Guard vessels but also ensures rapid response capabilities. Director-General Rakesh Pal highlighted the jetty’s role in accommodating significant ships by April 1, enhancing operational efficacy in the region. Furthermore, the facility is designed to support Indian Navy operations, reflecting a comprehensive approach to maritime security.
ICG Headquarters is situated at New Delhi. The Director-General Indian Coast Guard exercises Command and Control of the Organisation through 05 ICG Regional Headquarters located at Gandhinagar, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Portblair to discharge various mandated tasks including that of Maritime security and safety, surveillance in our Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and assistance to mariners and fisher folks in distress in Indian Search & Rescue Region (ISRR).
ICG Regional Headquarters (North West) was established on 16 Dec 2009 at Gandhinagar. It executes ICG’s mandated charter in maritime zones of Gujarat, Daman & Diu. Gujarat state has a coastline of 1,215 Km, which is one-sixth of the total coastline of the country and shares notional IMBL with Pakistan.
Regional Headquarters (North West), on an average deploys 10/12 ships and 2/3 aircraft on a daily basis for security, surveillance and to maintain constant vigil at sea. To support the operational platforms and for better operational efficiency, the ICG is focused towards development of berthing facilities which underscores, the commitment of the Govt. of India for equipping ICG with facilities for operating advanced surface and air platforms.
In addition to ICG Jetty at Vadinar, ICG is also constructing 100 mtr jetty extension at Porbandar, 200 mtr jetty at Okha and 125 mtr jetty at Mundra.
The event was witnessed by Director-General Rakesh Pal, AVSM, PTM, TM and Inspector General AK Harbola, TM, along with various dignitaries of Central and State Government.
