The Indian Coast Guard Region-East has augmented its aircraft fleet with two state of the Art Dornier 228 aircrafts, upgraded with latest avionics at HAL (TAD), Kanpur. These aircrafts arrived at Chennai from Kanpur on Wednesday.

The aircrafts were welcomed with customary water cannon-salutes upon arrival. The Midlife Upgrade (MLU) of ICG Dornier aircrafts is being done at HAL, Kanpur.
The upgrades include installation of state-of-the-art avionics systems and primary role sensors. This latest system will significantly boost the operational capabilities of aircraft, enabling it to perform critical roles such as Maritime Zones Patrol, Coastal Surveillance, Search and Rescue, Armed interdiction in more efficient manner.
The upgraded Dornier aircraft uses the same airframe as the conventional Dorniers, but with improved technologies viz., new five-bladed propeller, glass cockpit, 12.7 MM AV Gun, Satellite Communication systems etc.
This indigenous upgrade is a testament to the Indian Coast Guard’s commitment to “Atmanirbhar Bharat”, aligning with the Government of India’s Make-in-India initiative. Indian Coast Guard Air Station at Chennai maintains a potent fleet of aircraft and helicopters for seamless surveillance along Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Coast.
