NEW DELHI, AUG 10

This Independence Day, the Red Fort will echo not only with the voice of a nation but with the timeless song that once stirred millions to rise for freedom. As India prepares to celebrate its 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026, the historic ramparts of the Red Fort will witness a first—the National Song ‘Vande Mataram’ will be sung from the iconic venue as the nation commemorates 150 years of the immortal song.

Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, addressing a press conference in New Delhi on Monday, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unfurl the National Flag and deliver the customary address to the nation, with this year’s celebrations combining the enduring legacy of the freedom movement with the aspirations of Yuva Shakti and Viksit Bharat@2047.

  • For the first time, the National Song will be sung from the ramparts of the historic Red Fort as India marks 150 years of ‘Vande Mataram’
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi to unfurl the National Flag and address the nation on August 15
  • 5,000 special guests—from young innovators and scientists to farmers, artisans, sanitation workers and entrepreneurs—to witness the celebrations

  • 2,500 NCC cadets and My Bharat volunteers to form ‘वंदे मातरम्’ on Gyanpath as an IAF Mi-17 helicopter carries the commemorative banner
  • Military bands to stage performances at 343 locations nationwide, while youth-led competitions, public initiatives and Swachhta campaign add a participatory dimension

150 years of ‘Vande Mataram’—a song returns to the Red Fort

‘Vande Mataram’ will be sung as the Prime Minister arrives at the Red Fort, marking a historic tribute to the National Song and its enduring place in India’s freedom struggle.

The celebrations will carry the theme of 150 years of ‘Vande Mataram’, with floral decorations showcasing the words and 2,500 boy and girl cadets of NCC and My Bharat volunteers forming ‘वंदे मातरम्’ on Gyanpath opposite the ramparts.

Adding an aerial dimension to the tribute, an Indian Air Force Mi-17 helicopter will carry a banner commemorating 150 years of ‘Vande Mataram’ and shower flower petals over citizens gathered at the Red Fort.

The symbolism is unmistakable: a song that inspired generations during India’s struggle for freedom will once again become part of the nation’s most solemn Independence Day ceremony.

Youth power to drive Viksit Bharat@2047

This year’s celebrations place Yuva Shakti firmly at the heart of the national narrative, recognising the achievements of young Indians across science, innovation, entrepreneurship, skills and public service.

Among those invited are 19 Indian students who won medals at the International Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematical Olympiads 2026. Their presence on the ramparts will spotlight India’s growing scientific talent and the role of young minds in shaping the nation’s technological future.

View cutters in the backdrop will highlight India’s progress in nuclear and space technology, while floral decoration at the Guard of Honour area will depict the country’s journey towards Viksit Bharat@2047.

The celebrations therefore seek to connect the sacrifices of India’s past with the imagination, innovation and achievements of its youth—the generation expected to shape India by 2047.

5,000 special guests: India’s unsung heroes take the front row

Approximately 5,000 special guests from diverse walks of life have been invited to witness the grand ceremony.

The guest list reflects a deliberate effort to bring the nation’s grassroots achievers and everyday contributors into the heart of the Independence Day celebrations.

They include youth innovators, Prime Minister Internship Scheme interns, successful startups, PM Kaushal Vikas Yojana trainees, My Bharat volunteers and beneficiaries of NAMASTE, PM AJAY and SEED programmes.

Women entrepreneurs supported under PM Mudra Yojana, PMAY(U) beneficiaries, innovators and scientists, Bharat Taxi drivers, PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana beneficiaries, artisans under PM Vishwakarma, workers covered by PM-SYM and performing farmers under PM-MKSSY will also be among the special guests.

The celebrations will also salute India’s silent warriors—street vendors, urban sanitation workers, Delhi Metro personnel, Central Vista and Kartavya Path workers, and nursing orderlies and other government hospital staff.

More than 1,500 Delhi-based people from different States and Union Territories, dressed in traditional attire, will also attend, presenting a living microcosm of India’s extraordinary diversity at the Red Fort.

343 cities, one patriotic rhythm

The tribute to ‘Vande Mataram’ will extend far beyond Delhi.

Military bands of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Indian Coast Guard, NCC, CRPF, ITBP, CISF, SSB, BSF, Integrated Defence Staff, Railway Protection Force and Assam Rifles are conducting performances at 343 prominent locations across the country from August 8 to August 15.

The performances will remain open to the public, providing citizens an opportunity to participate directly in the Independence Day celebrations and strengthening patriotic fervour across the country.

The initiative turns music into a nationwide expression of national pride, bringing the traditions of India’s armed forces and uniformed services closer to citizens.

Children, innovators and citizens join the celebration

The Ministry of Defence, in collaboration with MyGov, has also organised a series of competitions to involve children and young citizens in the Independence Day celebrations.

These include an essay competition on ‘Role of AI in building a Viksit Bharat by 2047’, a painting competition on ‘India 1947 vs India 2047’, and online quizzes covering the Constitution, women in India’s freedom movement, milestones in modern India, space technology and nuclear technology.

Around 600 winners of these competitions will also be part of the celebrations.

The participatory character of the festival extends to ministries, the Delhi Government and Delhi Police, which are organising additional online and offline quizzes and activities.

A people-first celebration with seva at its core

The Independence Day arrangements also emphasise public convenience and the spirit of service.

Twenty-five cloak rooms at six locations, 200 volunteers from My Bharat and NCC, wheelchair assistance, pedestrian ramps and other facilities have been arranged for visitors.

Delhi Metro services will begin at 4 a.m. on August 15, with free metro services for invitees carrying e-invitation QR codes. Parking facilities, traffic information through Google and Mappls Maps and rain ponchos for invitees have also been planned.

The invitation card itself carries a powerful message of public service and commitment to duty, featuring ‘Seva Teerth’ and the Dharm Chakra.

The Prime Minister, while dedicating Seva Teerth to the nation, said it stands as a “radiant and powerful symbol of duty, compassion and commitment to the principle of Nation First.”

The invitation card seeks to inspire citizens to move forward with dedication towards the welfare of every citizen, while the Dharm Chakra symbolises the eternal movement of righteous duty and continuous selfless action.

From Red Fort to a clean India

The celebrations will not end when the crowds disperse.

A post-event Swachhta Campaign will be conducted at the Red Fort with NCC cadets and My Bharat volunteers undertaking systematic plogging and prompt removal of garbage.

The objective is to ensure that the historic monument is ready for visitors from across India on the same day while reinforcing the message of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

In another symbolic touch, seating enclosures for this year’s Independence Day ceremony have been named after major lakes of India, following the river-themed enclosures used during Republic Day 2026. The move also underscores the importance of water conservation.

With rainfall a possibility, drainage and sewage systems in and around the Red Fort and adjoining areas are being thoroughly cleaned to prevent waterlogging and ensure smooth conduct of the ceremony.

As India prepares to unfurl the Tricolour on August 15, the celebrations promise to weave together the memory of the freedom struggle, the immortal resonance of ‘Vande Mataram’, the energy of young India and the inclusive ambition of Viksit Bharat@2047.

The Red Fort will host the ceremony—but the larger message is intended to reach every Indian: remember the sacrifice, celebrate the achievement and accept the responsibility of building the India of tomorrow.
