Setting off yet another confrontation with MK Stalin-led DMK Governmnet, Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi on Tuesday said that the Tamil Nadu government had no authority to constitute a committee to select the Vice-Chancellor for the University of Madras without the approval of the Governor. According to the Governor, the notification, dated September 13, 2023, excluded the University Grant Commission (UGC) chairman’s nominee.

He called for the withdrawal of the committee and said that it was in violation of a Supreme Court order.
The DMK-led Tamil Nadu government had issued a gazette notification, appointing a search-cum-selection committee to appoint the Vice Chancellor for the University of Madras.
In a release, the Raj Bhavan noted that Ravi, the chancellor of the University of Madras, had issued a notification on September 6, notifying the constitution of the search-cum-selection Committee for the identification of candidate for the appointment of vice-chancellor of the university and the same was published in the website of Raj Bhavan as well.
“By an act of impropriety, the Principal Secretary to Government, Higher Education Department, has issued a further notification of a search-cum-selection committee by excluding the nominee of the UGC Chairman and the same is published in the Government Gazette on 13.09.2023, without adhering to the decision of the Honourable Supreme Court of India and in violation of the same. The notification published on 13.09.2023 is void ab initio, being contrary to the UGC Regulations and order of the Supreme Court,” the Raj Bhavan release stated.
On September 6, RN Ravi issued three notifications appointing a search-cum-selection committee to appoint VCs to University of Madras, Bharthiar University and Tamil Nadu Teacher Education University.
