Producer, comedian and director Manobala (69) died on Wednesday after suffering a liver-related ailment. He was bed-ridden for the past few days and was admitted in a private hospital in Chennai for treatment, where he breathed his last.
He is survived by his wife Usha and son Harish.

Manobala regularly collaborated with the biggest stars in Tamil cinema- Vijayakanth, Sathyaraj, Mohan, Rajinikanth, Ajith, and Vijay. The actor, producer and director began his career with the 1979’s Puthiya Vaarpugal, assisting director Bharathiraaja.
Having starred in more than 300 films, Manobala also had 24 films to his credit as director. His debut directorial feature was Aagaya Gangai in 1982, which starred Karthick and Suhasini in lead roles. His famous directorials include, Oorkavalan (1987) with Rajinikanth in the lead, Pillai Nilla (1985) headlined by Mohan, and En Purushanthaan Enakku Mattumthaan (1989) starring Vijayakanth.
Some of the veteran actor’s most noted acting works include Ghajini, Abhiyum Naanum, Thupakki, etc.
Manobalao was last seen in Ghosty and Kondraal Paavam. His recent hits include the likes of ‘Bigil’ and ‘Maari 2’.
He also had upcoming projects lined up, including ‘Kick’, ‘Indian 2’, ‘Haraa’ and others.
He also turned producer for H. Vinoth’s directorial venture ‘Sathuranga Vettai’. Manobala also took part in the celebrity cooking show ‘Cooku With Comali’ in 2022.
The film fraternity and his fans poured in their condolences. From actors Rajinikanth to Prem Kumar, his colleagues penned heartfelt notes to pay tribute to the actor. Actor Vijay’s fans shared tweets with pictures and clips showing the close bond shared between the two.
Director Imayam Bharathi Raja expressed his tearful condolences through a video message.
