In a decisive political statement ahead of the crucial 2026 Assembly elections, actor-turned-politician Vijay has firmly dismissed speculation about a possible alliance between his party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), and the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The clarification comes amid intense political chatter that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had been exploring ways to bring TVK into the NDA fold in Tamil Nadu, where the alliance is currently anchored by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

  • BJP leaders urge TVK to join anti-DMK Front; Vijay reiterates stand on political autonomy
  • 234-seat Assembly battle set to intensify with TVK challenging Dravidian dominance

Political observers say Vijay’s stance signals his determination to position TVK as an independent political force in a state traditionally dominated by Dravidian parties.

According to reports, TVK has categorically ruled out joining the NDA and intends to contest the elections independently, projecting Vijay as the party’s chief ministerial face and aiming for a single-party mandate.

BJP’s Appeal to Vijay

The speculation gained momentum after BJP spokesperson ANS Prasad publicly appealed to Vijay to join the AIADMK-BJP alliance in order to consolidate anti-DMK votes.

“If Vijay is sincere about stopping the DMK, he must align with the AIADMK-BJP alliance. Beyond power, seats or the Chief Minister’s post, the focus should be on rescuing Tamil Nadu,” Prasad said.

However, TVK leaders reiterated that the party would maintain political independence and build its own electoral base rather than become part of existing alliances.

A new political axis in Tamil Nadu

The upcoming Assembly election in the southern state is expected to be fiercely contested, with three principal political forces vying for power:

  • The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led alliance under Chief Minister M. K. Stalin,
  • The AIADMK-BJP-led NDA bloc, and
  • Vijay’s emerging TVK.

The 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly will go to polls in the first half of 2026, and analysts believe TVK’s entry could significantly reshape the electoral arithmetic by drawing support from youth, urban voters and first-time voters.

2021 Results and the Political Landscape

In the 2021 Assembly elections, the DMK-led alliance secured a sweeping victory with 159 seats, with the DMK alone winning 133 seats to cross the majority mark comfortably.

The AIADMK secured 60 seats, while the BJP managed to win four constituencies, highlighting the limited footprint of the national party in the Dravidian political landscape.

With Vijay’s TVK stepping into the fray and promising a “whistle revolution” through its poll symbol, Tamil Nadu’s traditionally bipolar politics could witness a dramatic shift.

“TVK will chart its own political path. The people of Tamil Nadu are looking for change, and we believe the mandate will come from the people themselves,” party sources said.

Political analysts believe the actor-politician’s ability to convert cinematic popularity into a statewide political network will be a decisive factor in determining whether the 2026 elections become a historic three-way contest.
