The Gujarat government on Thursday sought the help of over 1,000 private doctors in the treatment of COVID-19 patients if the situation in the state worsens in the future, officials said.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani held talks via video-conference from Gandhinagar with leading private doctors and office-bearers of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) of Gujarat in this regard, in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel who also holds health portfolio, secretary in the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), Ashwani Kumar, told reporters in Gandhinagar.

In a release, the state government said that it will get the services of around 1,000 private physicians and 300 anesthesiologists whenever required.

For timely response and effective use of resources in case of an emergency, the state government has decided to form a coordination committee in each district under the chairmanship of respective district collectors.

These committees will also have IMA representatives and leading doctors of each district, the release said.

The chief minister also directed the senior officials to form a state-level coordination committee comprising senior secretaries involved in coronavirus-related works and senior IMA members, the release said.

During the video-conference, Rupani assured that private doctors will be given personal protection equipment and N95 masks for enhanced safety.

The CM also urged the private practitioners to start an OPD ward in their respective clinics and emphasised that they should immediately report to the nearest government hospital dedicated to COVID-19 in case they find possible suspects of COVID-19.

Providing details of the essential items available in the state, the CM’s Secretary said, “193.34 lakh litres of milk is available in the state out of which 46.54 lakh litres has been consumed. 92,669 quintals of vegetables are available in Gujarat which includes 26,240 quintals of potatoes, 12,407 quintals of onions, 9161 quintals of tomatoes, and 44,859 quintals of green leafy vegetables. 19, 569 quintals of fruits are available in the state.

Around 73 lakh 30 thousand food packets have been distributed to the needy in Gujarat. 2 lakh 88 thousand passes have been issued to all the small vendors and others associated with providing essential items during the lockdown.

5,281 calls have been received on the state’s helpline 1070 and 24,331 calls have been received on the district helpline 1077.
