Vijay chief of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), delivered a sharp and sweeping address on Tuesday at a rally in Puducherry, aggressively pushing for full statehood for the Union Territory while renewing his political offensive against the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). The high-stakes speech comes at a time when TVK is attempting to extend its reach beyond Tamil Nadu, ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.

Statehood Demand and Political Charge

During the rally at Uppalam Helipad Ground, Vijay stressed that Puducherry’s long-standing demand for statehood has been ignored by the central government despite 16 assembly resolutions passed over the years. He accused both the central and state administrations of neglecting the region’s development, IT investments, and tourism infrastructure.

He contrasted the governance of the local government under N. Rangasamy with what he described as the “dynasty politics and venal rule” of the DMK in Tamil Nadu, appealing to voters to trust TVK instead.

Security Measures, Crowd Control and Flashpoints

Given the fallout from a previous rally in Karur — which ended in tragedy — authorities imposed strict restrictions for today’s event. Attendance was capped at 5,000; entry required QR-code passes; and heavy police deployment, CCTV surveillance and tight crowd-control protocols were laid down.

Nevertheless, a tense moment emerged when police detained a man carrying a licensed handgun attempting to enter the venue. The incident rekindled memories of the Karur stampede, intensifying scrutiny over TVK’s rally management practices.

Political Fallout: Mixed Reactions from Rivals & Observers

As Vijay pressed his campaign pitch, political rivals were quick to respond. The ruling DMK and its allies criticised the address as opportunistic, accusing TVK of playing on regional sentiments and ignoring past safety lapses.

Simultaneously, voices within his own potential alliance circles — including the All India NR Congress (AINRC) in Puducherry — appeared cautious, noting the delicate balance between supporting statehood demands and distancing from TVK’s polarising rhetoric.

TVK’s 2026 Vision: Casting a Wider Net

With today’s rally, TVK signals its ambition to expand beyond Tamil Nadu. Party insiders suggest the intention is to use Puducherry as a launchpad for future electoral contests, banking on statehood sentiment and dissatisfaction with traditional parties.

Vijay’s continued popularity and the infusion of experienced leaders into TVK’s organisational structure are seen as moves to transform TVK from a personality-driven outfit to a structured political alternative.
