SRIHARIKOTA/NEW DELHI, JULY 18

In a defining moment for India’s scientific renaissance and the rise of its private space industry, Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace on Saturday etched its name into history by launching Vikram-1, the country’s first privately developed orbital launch vehicle, heralding a transformative era for Indian innovation, entrepreneurship and STEM excellence.

Named Mission Aagaman (Arrival), the landmark mission signals India’s emergence as a formidable global commercial space power, demonstrating how visionary policy reforms, indigenous engineering and entrepreneurial ambition are reshaping the nation’s space ecosystem.

The seven-storey, four-stage Vikram-1 lifted off from the First Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, at 12.05 pm, following a planned 35-minute hold. The all-carbon composite launch vehicle is designed to deploy multiple payloads into a 450-km Low Earth Orbit, validating India’s indigenous commercial launch capability.

Before the historic liftoff, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Skyroot team and urged every Indian—especially the youth—to witness the mission that represents a bold new chapter in India’s space journey.

“A historic new frontier for India’s space journey!”

“At 11:30 AM today, Skyroot Aerospace will undertake the maiden orbital launch of Vikram-1, India’s first privately developed launch vehicle.”

“This four-stage rocket is designed to provide rapid and on-demand launch services. This mission highlights the talent, determination and entrepreneurial spirit of our youth. It also shows how our space-sector reforms are unlocking new opportunities for innovation and enterprise.”

“My best wishes to the entire Skyroot Aerospace team for a successful launch. May Vikram-1 soar high, create history and inspire a generation of innovators.”

“I urge all Indians, especially my young friends, to follow this historic mission and join in wishing Team Skyroot success using #IndiaWithVikram1.”

Congratulating the team, ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan described the launch as another significant milestone in India’s expanding space ecosystem and said the successful participation of private industry reflects the growing maturity of the country’s commercial space programme.

“This achievement demonstrates the strength of India’s vibrant private space ecosystem and reflects the success of the reforms that have opened the sector to innovation and enterprise. ISRO will continue to support India’s emerging space entrepreneurs in building globally competitive capabilities.”

Vikram-1, named after the legendary Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, is powered by indigenously developed propulsion systems, including advanced 3D-printed liquid engines and high-thrust solid rocket boosters. Built with an all-carbon composite structure, the launch vehicle represents a remarkable engineering achievement by India’s rapidly growing private space industry. The mission carries multiple domestic and international technology demonstration payloads, including Skyroot’s SCOPE satellite, Grahaa Space’s SOLARAS S3, DCUBED’s payload and Cosmoserve Space’s robotic arm, besides the symbolic “Cosmic Bloom” artwork and an 18-karat gold micro-rocket honouring India’s pioneering scientists.

A New Era Powered by Reforms

The historic launch is also a resounding endorsement of the Government of India’s ambitious space reforms. Since the notification of the Indian Space Policy 2023, private enterprises have been allowed to participate across the entire space value chain, catalysing unprecedented innovation, investment and entrepreneurship. India’s space startup ecosystem has expanded dramatically—from just one startup in 2014 to more than 400 in 2026—while the national space economy is projected to grow from USD 8.4 billion today to USD 40-45 billion by 2030, with a long-term vision of touching USD 100 billion by 2040.

The reforms have been reinforced by IN-SPACe, the autonomous single-window regulator, liberalised FDI norms, dedicated venture capital support and technology adoption funds, enabling India’s private space companies to compete confidently on the global stage.

For students, researchers and aspiring engineers, Vikram-1 is far more than a rocket launch—it is a powerful reminder that India’s next generation of scientists, innovators and entrepreneurs can dream beyond the skies. The mission stands as a beacon for STEM education, proving that indigenous talent, visionary leadership and scientific excellence can propel India towards becoming one of the world’s leading spacefaring nations.
