Voltas Limited, India’s major brand from the house of the Tata’s, in response to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis has launched a new line of Ultraviolet Light (UVC) based surface disinfectant solutions in addition to the engineered UVC based air and duct disinfectant solutions that the industry leader has been offering its consumers for the past several years. This is in line with the Tata Group’s commitment towards serving the community and making a positive social impact, according to a release.
Voltas Limited has always adopted a consumer-centric approach to fulfil India’s cooling and refrigeration requirements for residential and commercial applications. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has impacted individuals and organisations alike, forever changing the dynamics of human lifestyle through social distancing. Amidst all this, there are growing concerns about the myths of using of central Air-Conditioning systems in offices and commercial spaces, owing to suspicions that the virus is transmitted through AC vents.

As an industry leader, the brand has once again led by example by promptly collaboration with its engineering partners to increase its portfolio of UVC based products to address the survival of the COVID-19 virus on surfaces. The new bouquet of products include:
1) RUKS CoiloTron, that ensures near total elimination of Mold, Fungi, and Microbes on Cooling Coil and Drain Pan.
2) Handheld: HandHeld is a portable disinfection unit, designed for rapid sanitation of any surface.
3) UV Cart System: UV Cart System is designed to deliver high germicidal intensity, adequate to sanitize the area and inactivate the micro-organisms in a short time.
4) RUKS GermiTron: The RUKS GermiTron Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UGVI) System can kill 90% of bacteria and virus, per pass. This indoor air quality and bactericidal management system has a scientifically proven design with computerized selection to assure delivery of specified or target kill rate.
Details of the products
RUKS CoiloTron: The RUKS CoiloTron, developed by Voltas and Canada-based Ruks Engineering
Limited, ensures near total elimination of Mold, Fungi, and Microbes on Cooling Coil and Drain Pan.
This clean and modern Cooling Coil ensures near 100% elimination of Endotoxin and Pathogens on
coil, thereby reducing allergy symptoms, SBS, and indoor air related sickness. It also improves Heat
Transfer Efficiency up to 20%, resulting in reduced energy, thereby earning LEED and GBC Merit
Points due to its environment friendly nature. This product is suitable for new or retrofit installations
and it is easy to install and provides quick Return on Investment.
The RUKS CoiloTron has High Energy Output 425 mA lamps emitting at 253.7 nM, with two lamps
per fixture for increased energy and spread. Its high reflective mirror surface provides 86% specular
reflectivity, leading to two-fold increase in energy intensity. The high uniform UVC dose on cooling
coil penetrates deep down the rows for effective kill of bacteria. RUKS CoiloTron has the highest
lamp life in industry, with each lamp and holder protected with Quartz Sleeve equivalent to GE 214.
This allows high transmission of UVC rays at 253.7 nM, prevents moisture impregnation from cooling
coil on lamp surface and sustains uniform lamp temperature to ensure optimum lamp performance.
The Ruks CoiloTron has been listed to UL 1995. It is tested and certified by UL for compliance to fire
and smoke safety to UL 2043 and is CE Certified.
RUKS GermiTron: The RUKS GermiTron Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UGVI) System can kill 90%
of bacteria and virus, per pass. This indoor air quality and bactericidal management system has a
scientifically proven design with computerized selection to assure delivery of specified or target kill
rate. It provides software version of selection and is custom designed to suit airflow and duct size.
The rated average life of lamps is 16,000 hours, which is the longest in the industry. The high energy
output 800 mA lamps are installed in frame mounted Quartz Sleeve, which eliminates physical
contact with air stream, air borne dust, contaminants, and moisture from cooling coil— thereby
extending lamp life as mercury spill from broken lamp is confined to the quartz sleeve. RUKS
GermiTron is environmentally friendly, easy and quick lamp change, without withdrawal or removal
of frame from duct work or access door, or quartz sleeve. The lamp does not operate at ultra-low
wavelength and prevents production of ozone. The indicating lamp shows lamp failure, without
opening access door, or turning off power. It also has an option to show ballast failure and hour
meter to show lamp change. All wetted parts are stainless steel, which makes it appropriate for
hospitals and food processing facilities. RUKS GermiTron is suitable for new installations and
retrofits, is listed to UL 1995 and tested for fire and smoke rating to UL 2043.
There are also growing concerns about the lifespan of COVID-19 on different surfaces. Studies that
claim the COVID-19 virus remained viable up to 1 day on cloth and wood, up to 2 days on glass, 4
days on stainless steel and plastic, and up to 7 days on the outer layer of a medical mask. The COVID-
19 virus also survives in a wide range of pH values and ambient temperatures but is susceptible to
heat and standard disinfection methods. Voltas had collaborated with Ruks Engineering Ltd. Canada
to develop and launch products named UV Cart and HandHeld for disinfecting surfaces.
Handheld: HandHeld is a portable disinfection unit, designed for rapid sanitation of any
surface. Lightweight and portable, the operator positions HandHeld close to any target surface, and
moves the 3ft long unit along the surface as needed for full coverage. HandHeld is the perfect
solution to rapidly disinfect raised surfaces, recessed vertical surfaces, angled surfaces, and any
other target surface. These systems are safe for use on any common surface, including food, at the
recommended exposure. HandHeld exceeds 99.9% kill rate of COVID-19 when the target surface is
within six inches of the UV lamps, for a duration of 1 second.
UV Cart System: UV Cart System is designed to deliver high germicidal intensity, adequate to sanitize
the area and inactivate the micro-organisms in a short time. UV Cart System is designed with UVGI
Fixtures. Each Fixture contains 2 lamps, to ensure deep penetration over the surface. Multiple UVGI
Fixtures in one frame are designed to cover a large surface. Each UVGI unit or fixture is installed over
a custom profiled aluminium reflector mirror surface with specular reflectivity of 86% which diverts
UVC power emitted on all sides of the lamps back on the target surface. This product disinfects
walls, ceiling, floor in one movement apart from saving cost and time. The lamp is high output type
425 mA each, with a rated lamp life of 12000 hours. No pre design is required and it has a low
operating cost with minimum to no periodic maintenance.
