R ARIVANANTHAM
CHENNAI, MAR 30

In a moving celebration of resilience and inclusion, Vidya Sudha — Sri Ramachandra Learning Center for Children with Special Needs — is set to host its Annual Sports Meet, Thrive 2026, on March 31, bringing together children, parents, caregivers, and experts in a powerful reminder that ability thrives beyond limitations.

  • Annual Sports Meet champions inclusion, confidence, and courage among children with special needs
  • Tree plantation by outgoing students adds a green legacy to a day of growth and gratitude
  • Country’s first alumni association of its kind marks a milestone in lifelong care and connection
  • Holistic early intervention model continues to transform lives beyond medical boundaries
  • Parents, experts, and dignitaries unite to celebrate resilience, dignity, and hope

Established in 2004 under the Sri Ramachandra Educational and Health Trust, Vidya Sudha has emerged as a pioneering early intervention centre dedicated to children below the age of eight with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Guided by its motto “Catch them Young,” the institution focuses on early identification and intervention for newborns and high-risk children, offering them a chance at a more independent and integrated life.

Recognised by the Directorate for the Welfare of Differently Abled, Government of Tamil Nadu, the centre addresses a wide spectrum of conditions including autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, developmental delays, and other cognitive challenges.

A Day Beyond Sport: Celebration of Spirit

The Annual Sports Meet, Thrive 2026, will see participation from around 100 children along with their parents, transforming the arena into a space of joy, courage, and shared achievement.

An organiser noted: “This is not just a sports meet — it is a platform where our children express themselves freely, build confidence, and experience the joy of participation without barriers.”

The event is designed to promote physical activity, social interaction, and emotional growth, reinforcing the importance of inclusivity and equality.

Planting Hope, One Sapling at a Time

Adding a symbolic and environmental dimension, 10 outgoing students will plant saplings as part of a tree plantation drive.

Another organiser said: “Each sapling planted represents growth — much like our children, who flourish with the right care, patience, and nurturing.”

A Landmark Step: Alumni Association Launched

In a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, Vidya Sudha will inaugurate its Alumni Association, with around 30 former students with special needs expected to participate.

Highlighting the significance, an organiser remarked: “This alumni association is a testament to our lifelong commitment. Our relationship with these children does not end when they leave — it evolves.”

A Model of Holistic Care

Vidya Sudha stands out as a unique centre offering comprehensive rehabilitation services under one roof, affiliated with a medical university. A multidisciplinary team comprising special educators, occupational therapists, speech therapists, physiotherapists, clinical psychologists, optometrists, and nutritionists ensures integrated and personalised care.

Importantly, the institution prioritises children from economically weaker sections, with all rehabilitation services supported through sponsorships under the Trust’s social initiative.

Dignitaries to Grace the Occasion

The event will be attended by senior dignitaries including S. Madumathi, IAS, Secretary to Government, Department for the Welfare of Differently Abled Persons, and actor-producer S. Santhanam as Chief Guests.

Among the special invitees are K. Prabhakaran, General Secretary & Area Director, Special Olympics Bharat – Tamil Nadu; V.R. Venkataachalam, Chancellor, SRIHER (DU); and R.V. Sengutuvan, Pro-Chancellor.

As the children gear up to run, play, and celebrate, Thrive 2026 promises more than medals — it offers moments of triumph, dignity, and belonging, reminding society that true progress lies in inclusion and compassion.
