MUMBAI, SEPT 14

Faith met festive splendour at Mumbai’s iconic Chinchpokli Cha Chintamani as Pranav Adani, Director, Adani Enterprises, and Karan Adani, Managing Director, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. (APSEZ), along with their family, offered prayers to Lord Ganesha on the auspicious occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi. The visit added a prominent moment of devotion to the celebrations of the historic public Ganapati, now in its 107th year.

Pranav Adani said, “We are truly honoured to have partnered with the Chinchpokli Sarvajanik Utsav Mandal. In its 107th year, the Chinchpokli Cha Chintamani’s rich legacy has been synonymous with devotion, unity, and the cultural heartbeat of Mumbai.”

A century-old faith beats with Mumbai’s heart

Chinchpokli Cha Chintamani is regarded as Mumbai’s second-oldest public Ganapati, with a history deeply intertwined with the city’s former textile heartland of Parel, Girgaon and Lalbaug.

Its story also carries forward the legacy of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, who transformed Ganesh Chaturthi from a household observance into a mass public festival in the 1890s, giving the celebration a powerful role in community life and public participation.

Mill workers were among the important participants in the early years of the celebrations. Despite the upheavals following the 1982 mill strike and the sweeping urban transformation of central Mumbai, Chinchpokli Cha Chintamani has continued to serve as a cultural anchor for the neighbourhood.

Since 1939, the celebrations have been held beside the eastern side of Chinchpokli railway station, with the Chinchpokli Sarvajanik Utsav Mandal carrying the tradition forward.

Chintamani dons a South Indian temple avatar

Continuing its tradition of distinctive themes, this year’s celebrations offer an immersive experience inspired by the grandeur of South Indian temple architecture.

The idol is themed around Lord Venkateshwara Balaji of Tirumala Tirupati, incorporating sacred motifs including the Garuda, Keertimukh, Shankha, Chakra and camphor Tilak.

The grand pandal recreates the architectural splendour of the Sri Venkateshwara Temple (Swarnagiri) in Hyderabad and Bhuvanagiri, featuring soaring gopurams, sacred deepastambhas and sculpted yali/vyala guardian figures.

The result is a festive setting where Ganesh bhakti meets architectural grandeur, giving devotees an immersive spiritual and cultural experience.

Devotion extends beyond the pandal

With nearly 5,000 contributors, the Chinchpokli Sarvajanik Utsav Mandal has expanded its community role beyond the annual Ganeshotsav.

Its initiatives have included blood donation camps, healthcare programmes and activities for children, reflecting a tradition of community service alongside religious celebration.

The mandal also adapted its activities during the COVID-19 pandemic, scaling down public festivities while undertaking health-related initiatives, including testing camps, medical assistance and blood donation drives.

More than a century after its origins, Chinchpokli Cha Chintamani continues to embody a distinctive Mumbai tradition—where faith creates community, celebration preserves heritage and service gives devotion a wider meaning.
