Even as twenty-one days lockdown has begun across the state to arrest the spread of Covid-19, the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC) on Civil Hospital campus in Asarwa area of Ahmedabad has levelled-up its preparedness to deal with the inflow of possible Covid-19 infected patients with half of its staff strength, an IKDRC release said.
The institute has reduced its medical and non-medical staff by half to join the efforts of the government to break the spread of Covid-19 due to human infection.
“We have decided to reduce staff strength to safeguard them keeping in mind quick spread of Covid-19, but there shall be no compromise on the quality of treatment we offer to our patients,” said Dr Vineet Mishra, Director, IKDRC-ITS, Ahmedabad adding that smart staff scheduling executed to deal with the situation.
The institute which normally deals with renal disease patients at its 450-bed premises has made elaborate arrangements to accommodate 300 Covid-19 infected patients in case of any emergency.
“We have 100 beds in ‘Plug & Play’ condition to deal with Covid-19 infected patients who need immediate ventilatory support and dialysis,” said Dr Mishra.
Nonetheless, the entire IKDRC campus undergoes sanitization inwards and open area every alternate day to maintain disinfection on surfaces in the premises. The institute has also gone for a special fumigation technique to disinfect operation theatres to make them available for procedures within 15-20 minutes. The classic technique to fumigate operation theatres requires at least twelve hours to disinfect the area.
IKDRC has already suspended elective and non-life saving surgeries to prevent any possible Covid-19 infection, after implementation of ‘Common Consensus Guidelines for Infection Prevention and Control’ last week.
