Emphasizing early diagnosis of cancer, Dr Nilay J Brahmbhatt, Group Head-Clinical Research, Shalby Hospitals said, “Cancer is curable and early detection can be an added advantage especially if it is detected in the 1st or 2nd stage. So, there is a much high chance of cure and to decrease the rate of recurrence. Most of the cancers, if detected at an early stage, can be surgically removed and even chemotherapy can be avoided at times. Lack of awareness often delays the diagnosis and as a result, about 50 percent of cancer patients discover their ailments only in the third or fourth stage, which severely restricts their survival chances.”

According to Dr Bhavesh Parekh, an oncologist, “Practising yoga, meditation, avoiding fast foods, liquor, pan-gutka will help avoid the occurrence of cancer.”
“One-third of cancer can be prevented, 1/3 can be cured if detected at an early stage. Most of the deaths in India are caused by cancer and Ahmedabad in Gujarat tops this list. Among the victims, most of them are 20-35 age groups as they consume pan-gutka,” said Dr Ankit Thakkar, an oncologist.
Advocating the awareness of cancer among women, Dr Jagruti Koladiya, oncologist, emphasized that women in the age group of 40+ ought to go for breast cancer test being conducted at the hospital at an affordable rate of Rs 1,199 and added that free cancer screening camp is on until February 12 from 10 am to 5 pm.
Dr Koladiya further said that nearly 100 women had successfully undergone breast cancer treatment at the hospital in the last two years and 200 of them were subjected to irradiation therapy.

As part of the awareness drive,a group of 1,500 enthusiasts, including Cancer Survivors, Doctors and Youth took part in a 4-Km Marathon run, a campaign which is a call for action urging for personal commitment, demonstrating how the power of individual action taken now can impact the future.
