NEW DELHI, NOV 19

Calling the Centre’s decision to repeal the farm laws as a “great victory for the farmers and the Congress”, senior party leader P Chidambaram on Friday took a dig at the government, saying that the move was not inspired by a change of heart but impelled by “fear of elections”.

His remarks came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in an address to the nation this morning, announced that the government has decided to repeal the three farm laws, which were at the centre of protests by farmers for the past year.

Anyway, it is a great victory for the farmers and for the Congress party which was unwavering in its opposition to the farm laws

“What cannot be achieved by democratic protests can be achieved by the fear of impending elections!” Chidambaram tweeted.

The PM’s announcement on the withdrawal of the three farm laws is not inspired by a change of policy or a change of heart. It is impelled by “fear of elections”, the Congress leader charged in a series of tweets.

“Anyway, it is a great victory for the farmers and for the Congress party which was unwavering in its opposition to the farm laws,” Chidambaram said.

Many farmers had been protesting and were encamped at Delhi’s borders since November 2020 with a demand that the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, Farmers’ (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 be rolled back and a new law made to guarantee MSP for crops.

The Centre, which has held 11 rounds of formal dialogue with the farmers, had maintained that the new laws are pro-farmer, while protesters claimed they would be left at the mercy of corporations because of the legislations.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has slammed the Central Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking so long to repeal the three farm laws. She asserted that this move was made after the recent by-poll elections, which were hardly in the favour of the BJP. She tweeted in Hindi, “Martyrdom of more than 600 farmers. More than 350 days of struggle. @narendramodi ji your minister’s son crushed the farmers to death, you didn’t care. Your party leaders insulted the farmers and called them terrorists, traitors, goons, miscreants, you yourself called them agitators, lashed them with sticks, arrested them.”

— Priyanka Gandhi Vadra (@priyankagandhi) November 19, 2021

.. आपकी नियत और आपके बदलते हुए रुख़ पर विश्वास करना मुश्किल है।

किसान की सदैव जय होगी।
जय जवान, जय किसान, जय भारत। 3/3

— Priyanka Gandhi Vadra (@priyankagandhi) November 19, 2021

She continued, “Now you start seeing the defeat in the elections, then suddenly you started to understand the truth of this country – that this country has been made by the farmers, this country belongs to the farmers, the farmer is the true caretaker of this country and no government can crush the interest of the farmers in this country. It’s hard to believe your destiny and your changing attitude. The farmer will always be blessed. Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan, Jai Bharat.”

Ashok Gehlot lauds farmers’ patience post repeal of farm laws; ‘victory of democracy’

pic.twitter.com/DsDZ7xBqp8

— Ashok Gehlot (@ashokgehlot51) November 19, 2021

Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot wrote about the farm laws and slammed the Modi government. He wrote today in Hindi, “The announcement of the return of all three black agricultural laws is a victory of democracy and defeat of the arrogance of the Modi government. This is a victory for the patience of the farmers who have been agitating for the last one year. The country can never forget that hundreds of farmers have lost their lives due to the short-sightedness and pride of the Modi government”.

Shiv Sena links farm laws rollback to politics

In its first reaction to the impending withdrawal of farm laws, Shiv Sena claimed that the Centre’s decision was influenced by political considerations. Talking to the media on Friday, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut lambasted the Union government for its purported stubbornness to heed the opposition’s advice. While welcoming PM Modi’s announcement, he opined that BJP caved in owing to its fear of suffering a heavy defeat in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh and Punjab Assembly polls. Raut also lamented that more than 400 farmers lost their lives during the agitation against the agrarian laws.
