CHENNAI, MAR 6
Actor and social activist Varalaxmi Sarathkumar celebrated her birthday with a difference on Friday. Days ahead of International Women’s Day, which falls on Monday, March 8, she launched the E-Commerce on Wheels – Kadaiveedhi Cart online, an initiative of the E-Commerce platform for women empowerment— www.kadaiveedhi.shop — at the premises of Chennai Press Club.
While launching, Varalaxmi appealed to the masses to empower homemakers and patronise the underprivileged women, whose products are being sold through this E-Commerce on Wheels.
Varalaxmi, who is also the founder of the Save Sakthi Foundation, an NGO, said, “One need not expect the celebrity to speak for the cause of the uplift and empowerment of women, it should naturally come from the heart of the public.’’
On her work-front, she said that she is working on three Telugu movies now.
When asked about the support to her father’s political venture, she replied that she wishes to concentrate on her profession and nothing to do with politics as of now.
The co-founders of www.kadaiveedhi.shop, Jay Thattai and Sangeetha Arunachalam, said, “The motive of this initiative is to help women who are working from home. Most of the products selling through these carts are homemade and FSSI compliant.”
The food products and snacks were purely homemade without adding any preservatives, they said.
The street cart is loaded with women-made products like Hair care Skin Care, Accessories, Jewellery, Groceries, Podis, Pickles, Oils, Appalams, Sweets, Snacks, Perfumes, Incense sticks, Scented candles, etc.
These carts will be sponsored for underprivileged women, differently-abled and transgenders to eke out their living.
www.kadaiveedhi.shop was founded in 2017 to encourage women who are unable to go to work after childbirth.
“Anybody who has an idea in homemade products can approach us for promotion, we will create the brand and reach their products to the market pan India through this initiative’’.
It is not just an e-commerce platform, a complete skill development programme to ideate, mature, educate and build new products/services/events out of women who crave financial independence, they added.
Prominent NGOs like Save Sakthi Foundation, Tamil Nadu Differently Abled Charitable Trust, Chennai Volunteers, Ennangalin Sangamam & The Headway Foundation have encouraged this initiative and extended support for Kadaiveedhi.
Jay Thattai said their vision is to scale up this initiative Pan-India in the lines of Digital India. Atma Nirbhar Bharat & Vocal for Local to bring about a change at grass-root level.
