World-renowned Muslim religious scholar Sheikh Yusuf al-Qardawi died today. The news of his death was announced on his official Twitter account, reports Aljazeera. He was 96.
Egyptian-born Al-Qaradawi was based in Qatar as the Egyptian government expelled him for his political views. Al-Qaradawi was in favour of an elected government and vehemently opposed the military dictatorship.

He was head of the International Union of Muslim Scholars.
An Egyptian military court in 2018 gave him a death sentence on the allegations of his involvement in an incident of violence in 2015. He was tried in absentia.
He was the spiritual guide of the Muslim Brotherhood working for elected governments in Arab countries, most of whom either has a dynastic rule or military dictatorship.
Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood was the first elected president of Egypt. However, he was overthrown and jailed by the Egyptian Army chief Gen Abdul Fattah al-Sisi. Morsi died in prison.
