Stating that “You are not just today’s graduates, but tomorrow’s torchbearers, with the potential to provide visionary leadership that can drive positive change in our nation and the world and in this hallowed land of the Mahatma, immerse yourself in his words – “Be the change you want to see in the world,” Prof. Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay exhorted the young minds with wings of fire to look around them, and chart their own path in any area that interests them.
Padma Shri Prof. Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay, Director of Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata, who was the chief guest, was addressing at IITRAM’s 5th Convocation among the class of 2022 and 2023 here on Friday.
Every challenge presents an opportunity
“In our quest to improve our living conditions, and to have more conveniences, more luxury and more entertainment, we often forget the harm we cause to Mother Earth. Our energy requirements have gone up dramatically, yet our ability to generate this energy without hurting the planet and its environment is limited. In this reality of life, engineers will have a pivotal role in ensuring that technological advancements are environmentally sustainable and eco-friendly, resource usage is optimized, circular economy principles are employed, and environment friendly materials are used to the extent possible. The 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – has to be taken in its letter and spirit. We have to reduce our needs, we need to reuse to the extent possible, and we need to recycle every bit of it. We must remember our responsibilities as the most populous country of the world. To all the graduating students, remember that every challenge presents an opportunity. In every such problem, you will find openings for research, you will find business opportunities,” Prof. Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay added.
Imbibe the spirit of scientific inquiry
She also advised the graduating students to stand up for truth, justice, and for their rights and said, “Young friends, India can flourish when its science and technology flourishes, when its research not only expands the frontiers of knowledge but is also used to solve the problems facing the nation and the world. India will prosper when each of its citizens imbibes the spirit of scientific inquiry. India has achieved quite a bit, forcing the world to sit up and take note. The soft landing of Chandrayaan 3 on the lunar surface is one recent shining example.”
Stand up for truth, justice, and for your rights
“Be sympathetic to the problems that are not yours. Stand up for truth, justice, and for your rights and the rights of those who are less privileged than you. Be true to your profession and to your work. Do not be afraid to experiment, to challenge the limits of your abilities. As Nelson Mandela had put it, “It always seems impossible until it is done”. Let neither failures bother you, nor success elates you. In good times, work harder and enjoy life. In bad times, hold on patiently. The tide will turn. Remember, neither your good times, nor the bad ones will last forever. And when you can, give back to this Institute, to this society and to this country; be it your time, your thoughts or your resources,” the Padma Shri Awardee said in her pep talk..
Professor Sudhir K Jain, Chairman of the Board of Governors, IITRAM, Professor Bhrigu Nath Singh, Director General, IITRAM also spoke at the convocation.
