CHENNAI, APRIL 15

As many as 127 Tamils, most of them senior citizens, stranded in Varanasi in the Parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi since March 24 following the lockdown, were returning home in three buses to Chennai and will reach tomorrow, sources said.

They had left Varanasi two days ago, as the buses were arranged by the district administration, and are heading to Chennai with the hope to reach their home in various cities/towns in Tamilnadu.

Nearly 400 pilgrims stranded in Varanasi after the lockdown were taken care of by the administration of Kumarasami Mutt, Nagarathar Mutt and elsewhere with the help of civil service officials belonging to Tamil Nadu working in Uttar Pradesh.

Among the 400 stranded Tamils, some senior citizens were depressed. They wanted to return home to join their families in Tamilnadu and appealed to the district administration to arrange for their journey.

The Varanasi and neighbouring district administrations extended their helping hand by arranging three buses on payment basis.

As the buses were not permitted to stop anywhere in between except for filling fuel, managements of the mutt gave them enough biscuits, fruits and dry foods.

One of their buses got stuck in Jabalpur, where the district officials come to their rescue and helped them with food etc.

The three buses will be returning to Varanasi empty after dropping the pilgrims in Chennai, sources said.
