NEW DELHI, SEPT 25

Twenty unclimbed Himalayan peaks. All above 6,000 metres. Just 23 days. In a feat that combines extreme endurance with precision mountaineering, a 20-member team from the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS), Dirang, has scripted a remarkable chapter in India’s adventure-sports history by making the first-ever recorded ascents of 20 unclimbed peaks in the Ladakh Range.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh flagged-in the First Ascent Mountaineering Expedition in New Delhi on Friday, marking the culmination of the expedition led by Col Ranveer Singh Jamwal.

The unprecedented ascents were achieved in the Chamser-Lungser, Gyama Nala and Chokula areas of the Ladakh Range, with every successful summit adding a new milestone to India’s high-altitude exploration record.

Interacting with the expedition team, Defence Minister commended the climbers for their courage, determination and perseverance, describing the expedition as a demonstration of India’s mountaineering excellence and leadership in adventure sports.

Terming the climbers a source of inspiration, Rajnath Singh said the successful ascents had set new benchmarks and would encourage young mountaineers across the country to pursue adventure and exploration and make the nation proud.

The expedition was marked by meticulous planning, technical expertise, endurance and teamwork, with the climbers operating in one of the most demanding high-altitude environments.

Beyond the sporting achievement, the expedition was conceived to promote the spirit of adventure and exploration in India’s high-altitude frontiers and inspire a new generation to explore the country’s mountains.

The successful summits also underline the growing capabilities of Indian mountaineers in undertaking technically demanding expeditions at extreme elevations, strengthening India’s presence on the global mountaineering map.

The expedition team comprised 20 highly skilled climbers from NIMAS, Dirang, under the leadership of Col Ranveer Singh Jamwal.

Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and other senior officials of the Ministry of Defence were present at the flag-in ceremony held at Kartavya Bhavan-2, New Delhi.

The achievement brings together the thrill of exploration and the discipline of high-altitude mountaineering—offering young Indians yet another reason to look towards the Himalayas not merely as a frontier, but as a vast arena for adventure, discovery and human endurance.
