NEW DELHI, AUG 2
Seventy-nine years of Independence. Seventy-nine NCC cadets. And 79 kilometres of pedal power through the heart of the national capital. Turning the symbolism of freedom into a physical expression of fitness, discipline and patriotism, the National Cadet Corps organised Cyclothon 2026 in New Delhi on Sunday to commemorate India’s 79th year of Independence.
Flagged off by Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya, the cyclothon transformed a sporting event into a larger message of national pride, environmental responsibility and youth participation in nation-building.
The event was held in the presence of Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, boxer M C Mary Kom and tennis player Leander Paes.
Leading the symbolic ride, Director General, NCC, Lieutenant General Virendra Vats headed the group of 79 NCC cadets on the 79-km route, which began and ended at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, passing through prominent landmarks of the national capital.
When patriotism takes to the road
The ride was organised under the theme “Clean India, Green India, Fit India”, linking the spirit of Independence with three contemporary national priorities—cleaner surroundings, environmental sustainability and a healthier population.
The NCC sought to use the event to encourage young people and the public to embrace cycling as an eco-friendly and sustainable mode of transport, while drawing attention to environmental conservation, reduced carbon emissions and healthier lifestyles.
The symbolism was unmistakable: the cadets did not merely commemorate Independence with a ceremony; they carried its message across the city on wheels.
79 cadets, one national message
The 79-km ride was the centrepiece of Cyclothon 2026, with the participation of NCC cadets underscoring the organisation’s emphasis on discipline, unity, teamwork and national service.
The initiative also sought to reinforce the NCC’s commitment to wider national missions, including TB Mukt Bharat, Swachh Bharat, Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam and Har Ghar Tiranga.
By bringing these themes together on a single platform, the event sought to demonstrate how patriotism can extend beyond ceremonial observances into everyday responsibilities—from maintaining personal fitness and protecting the environment to following road-safety norms and serving the community.
Fitness, green mobility and responsible citizenship
The cyclothon also highlighted cycling as a practical means of promoting physical fitness while reducing dependence on carbon-intensive transport.
For the NCC, however, the larger objective went beyond fitness.
The event sought to inspire youth to become ambassadors of positive social change, with discipline, teamwork, resilience and community service positioned as essential attributes of responsible citizenship.
The message was particularly relevant for young India: a stronger nation is built not only through its armed forces and institutions, but also through citizens who are fit, disciplined, environmentally conscious and willing to serve society.

From freedom’s memory to the future’s responsibility
Cyclothon 2026 thus brought together two powerful ideas—the freedom India won 79 years ago and the responsibility of its young citizens to strengthen that freedom through constructive action.
The 79-km ride became a moving tribute to Independence while simultaneously spotlighting the need for a healthier, greener and more responsible India.
For the NCC cadets, every kilometre carried a message: patriotism is not confined to flags and ceremonies. It can be expressed through discipline, fitness, environmental stewardship, community service and the determination to contribute to a stronger nation.
