The 16th Annual Intellectual Property Summit organised by YJ Trivedi-AMA Academy for Intellectual Property Rights on Friday brought together top experts, entrepreneurs, academicians and other participants who emphasised the need for a strong IPR regime. The Summit saw insightful discussions on a range of topics covering the relevance of emerging technologies and IP, influence on new business models, role in strategic alliances and M&As, among others.

The flagship Summit kicked off with AMA president Deevyesh Radio and AMA governing council member Gopi Trivedi setting the tone. In his address, Dr Narottam Sahoo, advisor to Gujarat Council on Science and Technology, touched upon the development of IP culture over the years and the Council’s role in getting 16 GI Tags for Gujarat.

The first session focused on digital business models and their unprecedented growth rate. Anubhav Kapoor, Director of Legal Affairs at Ford India, explained the influence of IP on new business models in the digital age. He spoke about the shift in the digital world due to technology and stressed the need for change in laws to handle new AI technologies.

Speaking about the role of IPR in strategic alliances and M&As, Munish Sudan, Head of IP and External Research Collaborations at Tata Steel, touched upon the open model of innovation, focusing on strategic IPR and R&D and usage at all stages of alliances.

Gregory L Maurer, Partner at the Portland office of Klarquist, discussed the challenges and new frontiers in emerging technologies and IP. Dr Anurag Gupta from Atal Innovation Mission, Niti Aayog, shared his thoughts about monetising IP while solving complex problems with simple solutions.
In her comments, Lakshika Joshi, Legal Leadership and Global IP Head at Capgemini Engineering, spoke about IP-related complexities during technology transfer.
“What an insightful and informative event the 16th IP Summit has been. The relevance of IP has surged in today’s modern and digital world. It is no longer restricted to traditional IP such as trademarks, copyrights, patents, and designs, but covers a much broader area. IP rights protect businesses and inventions and attract investors. At the Summit, the expert speakers noted that issues about the development, assessment, protection and exploitation of intellect in terms of intellectual property have become increasingly crucial, and emphasised the need to establish a strong IPR regime.
