Commenting on this Dr Kumud Dhital, Program Director Lung Transplantation, Marengo Asia Hospitals says, “Interstitial Lung Disease, previously referred to as Pulmonary fibrosis, is one of many conditions that can lead to advanced Lung Disease. Lung transplantation is a highly complex but proven therapy for selected candidates for whom medical therapy is no longer effective, with a higher chance of transplantation and better outcomes if referred to a Lung Transplant center in a timely manner. There has been a marked increase in regular referrals for lung transplant evaluation in Ahmedabad following this seminal case. It has been an honor to lead this team for this case and continued lung transplant activity at Marengo CIMS Hospital for the benefit of patients in and out of Gujarat.”
Dr Dhiren Shah, Director & HOD, Heart Transplant Program says, “My team and I introduced the first-ever Heart Transplant Program in Gujarat. With the successful launch of heart transplants where we have been able to conduct 39 heart transplants so far, we were equipped to launch the Lung Transplant Program at Marengo CIMS Hospital to position ourselves as an emerging center of excellence for organ transplants. The Lung Transplant Program is designed to introduce one of the most complex surgical organ transplants that require a very high level of clinical excellence. With the success of the first-ever bilateral lung transplant in the state of Gujarat, we are poised to create several milestones with teamwork to bring outcomes to change the face of healthcare.”
Dr Keyur Parikh, Chairman – Marengo CIMS Hospital says, “Organ donation and transplantation is a milestone in the modern medicine space. It provides a second chance for a patient to live life much longer. From despair to hope, we have seen the journey of patients with end-stage of organ failure to recovery post-surgical procedures. This is a very gratifying experience that surgeons go through.”
Dr Raajiv Singhal, Managing Director & Group CEO, Marengo Asia Hospitals says, “Every life matters, every minute counts. We sincerely thank the donor’s family who selflessly donated the organs to embody this highest form of humanity. Over the past several years, Marengo CIMS Hospital has been undertaking pioneering work in the areas of Heart, kidney, liver, and bone marrow transplants. With this program, the organ transplant department makes the hospital a preferred destination for multiple organ transplants. Marengo CIMS Hospital created history in the year 2016 in heart transplants by conducting the first-ever heart transplant in Gujarat. We have set another record for the first-ever lung transplant in Gujarat. We aim to be a leader in organ transplantation focused on bringing global expertise and clinical excellence at international levels. With increased organ transplants by our medical experts, we have emerged as a preferred destination for organ transplants in India.”
Lung transplantation has come of age in India. Lung transplant has become a definitive treatment option for select end-stage lung disease patients. Retrieved from cadaveric donors, lung transplants have picked up in the last two decades as awareness of organ donation has gone up significantly. With more and more families coming forward to donate organs to save lives, the gap between demand and supply is expected to become smaller.
