On a mission to create awareness on cancer diseases affecting men, a group of 15 doctors attached to Kauvery Cancer Institute coming together to observe `No Shave November’ and “Movember’’.
Announcing this at a media conference Dr AN Vaidhyswaran, Director Radiation Oncology along with Dr Iyyappan Ponnusamy, Medical Director said, “Inspired by the global movements that encourage men to grow facial hair – mustache and beard – during November to raise awareness about men health issues, including prostrate cancer, testicular and breast cancer.’’

Replying to a query on if men prone to breast cancer, Dr Vaidhyswaran said the breast cancer among men also common but curable if it is detected at early stage. As far as breast cancer is concerned, men are more prone to spread the virus to other parts of the body than women, he added.
Dr Iyyappan Ponnusamy said that prostrate cancer infection could be detected through simple laboratory tests, as early detection and treatment will help to cure the disease fully through robotic surgery.
Dr Iyappan Ponnuswamy, Medical Director and Chief Radiologist at Kauvery Hospital Alwarpet added, “Radiology plays a pivotal role in early cancer detection. Regular screenings, such as mammograms and CT scans, can identify potential issues before symptoms manifest.”
Dr SujaySusikar, a prominent surgical oncologist at Kauvery Cancer Institute, emphasized, “Participating in ‘No Shave November’ or ‘Movember’ is a fun and impactful way to draw attention to serious health issues. It’s a conversation starter, allowing us to discuss the importance of regular health check-ups and early detection.”
“Cancer doesn’t discriminate. It’s crucial for men to prioritize their health and take preventive measures,” said Dr. Velmurgan Deisingh, Consultant Anaesthesiologist and Head of the Department Anaesthesia, Kauvery Hospital Main, Alwarpet.
“As an ENT surgeon, I often see the impact of delayed diagnoses. Regular check-ups and awareness are fundamental in preventing advanced stages of cancer,” remarks Dr. Niraj Joshi, ENT Surgeon.
The doctors said, “Our aim is to raise awareness about men’s cancer and health issues, fostering open conversations about the importance of early detection, prevention, and overall well-being. According to recent statistics from leading health organizations, men continue to face significant health challenges, with cancer being a prominent concern. Prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and colorectal cancer are among the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in men. The need for awareness and early detection is paramount, as timely intervention can greatly impact treatment outcomes. Timely intervention can significantly improve the success of cancer treatment. Regular check-ups, especially for men over 40, can catch potential issues early on.’’
Men are encouraged to be proactive about their health. Regular screenings, self-examinations, and an open dialogue with healthcare professionals are vital steps in maintaining overall well-being.
