A diplomatic storm has erupted following the official visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Lakshadweep this month. The picturesque images shared on Modi’s social media, depicting serene beaches and underwater adventures, were meant to showcase the natural beauty of Lakshadweep. However, the posts inadvertently triggered an unexpected controversy and a social media war with the Maldives, escalating into a diplomatic row.
Unsavoury remarks came from Maldivian Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Information, and Arts Mariyam Shiuna and her counterparts. In a now-deleted post, Shiuna not only disparaged Modi but also made derogatory comparisons, including one likening India to cow dung.
The Maldives government acted swiftly, distancing itself from the inflammatory comments and suspending the offending ministers. In a statement, the government clarified that the remarks were personal opinions and did not represent the official stance. The incident highlights the delicate nature of diplomatic relations in the era of social media.
Interestingly, this controversy brings to light the foresight of Ramayana exponent Morari Bapu, who, nearly two years earlier, had conducted the ‘Manas Sagar’ Katha in Lakshadweep from January 22 to January 30, 2022. The Katha, named ‘Manas Sagar,’ not only imparted spiritual teachings but also advocated for increased tourism to India’s island territory. The event drew a diverse audience, and Morari Bapu, adhering to strict COVID-19 protocols, hoisted the national flag on the 73rd Republic Day on January 26, 2022.
Reflecting on the significance of the tricolour, Morari Bapu emphasized, “The saffron colour of our flag is a symbol of truth, the white symbolizes pure love, and the green represents compassion. On this sacred day, my best wishes go to every Indian. May our flag forever fly with pride in every part of the world.”

Morari Bapu’s teachings have always emphasized unity and understanding among nations. His Katha in Lakshadweep, ‘Manas Sagar,’ was a testament to the cultural richness of the region and the need for Indians to explore their own diverse heritage.
No celebrities.. No advertisements. Just one man Narendra Damodardas Modi and the entire Maldives is shaken. We are so so proud of our prime minister. Name a better and bigger brand than him. No one. 🇮🇳🇮🇳#Lakshadweep #BoycottMaldives #NarendraModi pic.twitter.com/VJ8RRX7Zh0

Morari Bapu’s earlier call for increased tourism to Lakshadweep takes on added significance in the current controversy surrounding Modi’s visit. His vision for cultural exchange and understanding becomes even more relevant in the context of strained diplomatic relations.
Adding to the complexity of the situation, recent media reports reveal that tourism in the Maldives heavily relies on India, with more than 2,09,000 trips made by Indian tourists in 2023, constituting 11 per cent of its tourism market. The derogatory remarks made by Maldivian officials have triggered a strong response from Indian holidaymakers, some of whom have taken to social media to express their displeasure. The hashtag #BoycottMaldives trended as screenshots of cancelled trips circulated online.
In a show of solidarity, Indian celebrities, from Bollywood actors to cricket players, have urged their fans to consider local destinations instead, using the hashtag #ChaloLakshadweep, meaning “Let’s go to Lakshadweep.” This social media campaign has sparked a sudden interest in vacation visits to the archipelago, showcasing the power of public opinion in shaping travel choices.
