Stating that that the graduates of the RRU are ready to tackle the emerging challenges and protect India’s economic, social and sovereign rights, Union Minister of Finance and Minister of Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman urged the need for the Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) to continuously upgrade its curriculum to ensure simultaneous growth in the National Security of India.
In her address at the fourth Convocation ceremony of the RRU on Monday, Sitharaman extended the graduates her good wishes and congratulations. Emphasizing the role of RRU in ensuring the robust financial and economic security of India, she shared her view of having a rare honour to be enrolled in a University that is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. She pondered upon the vision of the then CM of Gujarat and current PM of India in establishing a University like RRU. She mentioned the idea of identifying a niche area like that of National Security and widening the horizon of National Security from being which was only limited to the Armed Forces earlier. Mentioning the fact that in a large country with a large economy like India, security is not just taking place at the borders but also something to be fed in the national sense of the well-being of the people, she threw light on training youths, upskilling them; and filling up the gaps.
The Finance Minister also commended Prof. (Dr.) Bimal N. Patel, Vice Chancellor, RRU for his dedicated work towards National Security over the years. She highlighted the importance of value-added training for armed forces, etc. Recognising newer challenges not just at the borders, she added, technology doesn’t stay at the borders and that the cyber world can be a threat to the financial security of the country. In this backdrop, she highlighted the benefits of technology through DPI (Digital public infrastructure) and the threat therein at the same time. “Digital presence makes life easier”, she focused.
Commenting on PM Modi’s Vikshit Bharat vision by 2047, she believes that the graduates of the RRU are ready to tackle the emerging challenges and protect India’s economic, social and sovereign rights. The digital growth of India is far better than most developed countries, mentioning the COVID-19 period as a prime example of this. Equipment used and training for those equipment shall march hand in hand, the chief guest added. She shared various statistics with respect to the net growth in defence production and exports, growth in the maritime sector of India, the ship leasing sector in the GIFT IFSC, and the renewable energy sector, among others. Wishing all the best to RRU and the class of 2023-24, she concluded her address.
The occasion also witnessed the presence of Minister of Finance, Energy and Petrochemicals, Government of Gujarat Kanubhai Mohanlal Desai as the Guest of Honour.
Thirteen (13) students bagged (name of the gold medal, if any) gold medals as a testament to their exceptional performance throughout their academic journey at RRU. Meanwhile, three (3) students were awarded with the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) for their outstanding contribution towards extensive research in the field of physical education and technology. Eleven (11) Navy officers received Diploma/PG Diploma as an acknowledgement of their dedication and commitment to advancing their academic vigour while serving in the armed forces.
Declaring the fourth convocation open, Prof. (Dr.) Bimal N. Patel, Vice Chancellor, RRU, went on to present the University report of the major achievements of the RRU as the University entered Amrit Kaal, leading to the realisation of the vision of Vikshit Bharat by 2047. Prof. Patel added the year 2024 as a year of programs and activities. He mentioned the Golden Jubilee celebration of the All India Police Science Congress (AIPSC) jointly hosted at RRU organised by the BPR&D. He stated that RRU is the second home for security personnel. He mentioned the 3rd annual edition of the Bharat National Cyber Security Exercise in collaboration with the National Security Council Secretariat of the Prime Minister’s Office. Emphasizing the role of RRU in ensuring the robust financial and economic security of India, he highlighted the importance of the ‘Master in Financial and Economic Crimes (MFEC)’ program offered by RRU in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA) along with stakeholders from law enforcement officials of the Government of India.
In his report, he further added that 1,200 officials dealing with new criminal laws have been trained by the University. He mentioned the recognition of RRU as a Maritime Training Institute by the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping). The University Grants Commission (UGC) recognised RRU as the Nodal Centre for Defence Studies for all Universities and colleges across India.
RRU will also be hosting the World Police and Fire Games 2029 for fire and police personnel across the globe. RRU is the first in India and fourth in Asia to hold an Olympic studies and research centre viz., Bharat Centre for Olympic Research (BCORE), which is looking forward to hosting the first international Olympic Conference very soon. Special mentions were made to two female students of RRU – one for climbing Mt. Everest and the other for bagging the Arjuna Award. Moving forward, he talked about the upcoming campuses of RRU in Kashmir, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
A total of four hundred forty-seven (447) students of different branches from across five campuses of RRU were awarded degrees and diplomas in the august gathering. Two books were also launched at the ceremony – one “Vishwa Sahayak: Accolades of India’s Global Aid and Assistance” and the other coffee table book “A Glimpse of 365 Days”.
