The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has launched a massive outreach and rescue preparedness drive as the Bay of Bengal witnesses deteriorating weather conditions following the formation of a new well-marked low-pressure area. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is likely to intensify into a depression by October 25, a deep depression by Sunday, October 26, and potentially into a cyclonic storm over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of Monday, October 27.
Coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are already witnessing heavy to very heavy rainfall, prompting authorities to step up preparedness and ensure the safety of fishing communities.

In coordination with state fisheries departments and local administrations, ICG Region East has commenced large-scale awareness and evacuation efforts. Coast Guard ships, aircraft, and radar stations are continuously alerting fishermen at sea, urging them to return to the nearest harbours for safety. So far, around 985 fishing boats from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry have been shepherded to safety.
All oil rigs and offshore platforms along the east coast have also been alerted, with Coast Guard assets maintaining constant communication to ensure protection of lives and property.
Centre and States Activate Disaster Mitigation Measures
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Forces (SDRF) of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have been placed on standby, with pre-positioning of rescue teams, boats, and essential relief materials in vulnerable coastal districts. The Ministry of Home Affairs has advised close coordination between central and state agencies to minimize risks and ensure timely response to any eventuality.
Control rooms in Chennai, Nellore, and Visakhapatnam have been activated round-the-clock to monitor sea conditions, rainfall, and wind patterns. Fishermen have been advised to stay away from the sea until further notice.
Reaffirming its commitment to safety at sea, the Indian Coast Guard said it remains steadfast to its motto — “Vayam Rakshamah” (We Protect) — ensuring nil loss of life and maximum preparedness ahead of the impending cyclone.
