Tamil Nadu’s political battlefield is heating up ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin putting his party on a war footing — even as the BJP’s central leadership intensifies its bid to breach the Dravidian bastion with a renewed southern strategy and installation of a Tamil as the Vice President.
In a tough internal directive issued this week, the DMK president has barred all ministers, MLAs and district secretaries from foreign travel until the completion of the Assembly elections, instructing them to stay in their constituencies and engage directly with voters.
- Stalin grounds ministers, bars foreign trips till 2026 polls after internal review flags weak grassroots connect
- Despite the rollout of flagship welfare schemes such as Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai, Illam Thedi Kalvi, and Namakku Naamey clinics, prty needs to work hard for the comeback
- Modi–Shah craft aggressive Tamil push, eyeing symbolic move with installation of a Tamil as the VP
Party insiders told navjeevanexpress.com that the move follows an internal assessment warning that several DMK legislators have lost touch with ground realities despite the rollout of flagship welfare schemes such as Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai, Illam Thedi Kalvi, and Namakku Naamey clinics.

“The Chief Minister was blunt — he told ministers that people should see their MLAs, not their social media posts,” said a senior DMK functionary present during the review.
Following the announcement of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists by the ECI, the DMK alliance parties scheduled to meet at 6 PM at Anna Arivalayam in Chennai on Monday. The meeting will be chaired by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M.K. Stalin, to discuss the future plans.
Sources said Stalin, who has personally met over 150 constituency in-charges in the past month, is “deeply concerned” that the party’s connect with voters has weakened, especially in semi-urban belts where Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and BJP’s re-energised southern cell are gaining traction.

Meanwhile, in Delhi, the Modi–Shah duo has turned its gaze southward with Tamil Nadu emerging as a prestige target for the 2026 polls. The recent installation of a Tamil leader for the Vice President’s post — part of a broader outreach designed to blend national identity with regional pride.
A senior BJP leader familiar with the discussions told navjeevanexpress.com, “The leadership wants to send a clear message — that the BJP is not an outsider in Tamil Nadu. A Tamil face in Rashtrapati Bhavan or Parliament’s high office is a powerful signal before 2026.”

Political analysts see the DMK’s new restrictions and BJP’s counter-moves as the clearest signs yet of a high-stakes, multi-cornered contest — with AIADMK, TVK, BJP, and Seeman’s NTK also jostling for space.
As the DMK tightens its internal discipline and the BJP sharpens its southern narrative, Tamil Nadu’s electoral stage is fast transforming into the most-watched battleground of 2026 — where both Dravidian legacy and national ambition will be on the line.
