Southern Railway has surged ahead in its electrification mission, achieving 97.63 per cent electrification of its total rail network—a landmark stride towards energy-efficient, environment-friendly rail transportation in line with Indian Railways’ sustainability goals.
Railway electrification in Southern Railway traces its legacy back to 1931, with the commissioning of the Chennai suburban section. Building on this pioneering foundation, the zone has, in recent years, commissioned several key routes across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry and Karnataka, significantly improving operational efficiency, cutting fossil fuel dependence, and reducing the carbon footprint of rail operations.
- Over 97.6% of rail network electrified, marking a major leap towards sustainable transport
- Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry & Karnataka routes drive efficiency, energy security and eco-gains
- Four divisions fully electrified as Southern Railway sets sights on complete coverage by 2027
As on December 15, 2025, Southern Railway has electrified 4,995 route kilometres (RKM) out of its total 5,116 RKM network. The zone is now on the cusp of becoming almost fully electrified, reinforcing Indian Railways’ commitment to clean energy transition.
Of the remaining sections, 53 RKM are technically not feasible for electrification, including the UNESCO-listed Mettupalayam–Udagamandalam Heritage Mountain Railway and a short stretch between Ernakulam and Kochi Harbour Terminus near the Naval Air Base. Excluding these, the total electrifiable network stands at 5,075 RKM, of which only 132 RKM remain.
The final phase of electrification—covering the Tiruturaipundi–Pattukkottai–Karaikkudi section (120 RKM) and Chinna Salem–Porpadakurichi stretch (12 RKM)—is scheduled for completion during 2026–27, paving the way for near-total electrification.
Among Southern Railway’s six divisions, Chennai, Madurai, Palakkad and Thiruvananthapuram have already achieved 100 per cent electrification. Salem Division stands at 98 per cent, while Tiruchchirappalli Division has reached 88 per cent, with rapid progress underway.
With this achievement, Southern Railway is not only modernising its infrastructure but also playing a decisive role in India’s climate action roadmap, delivering faster, cleaner and more reliable rail connectivity across the southern states.
