In a significant development in the Karur stampede case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has summoned actor-politician Vijay, founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), for questioning in connection with the tragedy that claimed 41 lives during a party rally. Vijay has been directed to appear before the agency at its New Delhi headquarters on January 12, officials said.

  • TVK submits video evidence alleging administrative and police lapses; pledges full cooperation
  • Case tests accountability, crowd-control norms and citizens’ fundamental rights

The summons comes as Vijay prepares for the release of “Jana Nayagan,” his final film before transitioning full-time into politics, adding a political and public spotlight to the ongoing criminal investigation.

SC-Ordered Probe and Rights Dimension

The case was transferred to the CBI following a Supreme Court directive, passed on a petition filed by TVK seeking an independent probe. Emphasising the constitutional dimension of the tragedy, the apex court observed that the incident has a direct bearing on the fundamental rights of citizens, warranting investigation by a central agency.

While handing over the probe, the Supreme Court also proposed the constitution of a three-member committee to ensure transparency and public confidence, requesting Justice Ajay Rastogi to head the panel.

TVK’s Stand: Evidence Submitted, Cooperation Assured

According to a recent media report, TVK has submitted video evidence to the CBI, contending that administrative lapses and failures in police crowd management contributed to the deadly stampede at the rally addressed by Vijay on September 27. The party has repeatedly stated that it will fully cooperate with the investigating agency and assist in establishing the sequence of events that led to the loss of lives.

State Government Rejects Negligence Allegations

The Tamil Nadu government, however, has strongly refuted allegations of negligence. It has maintained that the Karur district administration and police authorities acted with utmost diligence, foresight and adherence to statutory protocols.

“The records clearly establish that the district administration and police complied with all procedural safeguards,” the government has claimed, terming the allegations of dereliction of duty as baseless and devoid of merit.

Legal and Political Implications

With over 60 persons injured and dozens of families seeking accountability, the CBI probe is expected to examine crowd-control planning, permissions, on-ground execution, and responsibility fixation—issues that could have wider ramifications for political rallies and public assemblies across the country.

As the investigation progresses, Vijay’s appearance before the CBI is likely to mark a crucial phase in a case that sits at the intersection of criminal liability, administrative accountability and democratic rights.
