“As the nation moves forward with a clear and firm policy on issues related to its sovereignty, personalities such as Late Lt Gen SK Sinha are a constant source of inspiration to the Government,” the Defence Minister said, paying glowing tributes to the distinguished officer’s unwavering loyalty and dedication.
A Warrior Forged in the Crucible of History
Recalling Lt Gen Sinha’s early years of service, the Defence Minister highlighted his role during some of the most defining moments in India’s military history. Born in 1926, Lt Gen Sinha represented India on the Burma front during the Second World War and later played a crucial operational role in 1947, coordinating the first airlift of Indian Army troops to Srinagar as Pakistan-backed forces advanced towards Kashmir.
Commending his exceptional professional competence, the Defence Minister noted Lt Gen Sinha’s outstanding performance at both Indian and British Staff Colleges, describing him as a brave officer of exceptional intellect and foresight.
Building Institutional Strength Beyond the Battlefield
The Defence Minister also underscored Lt Gen Sinha’s enduring contributions to the Indian Army’s institutional evolution. During his tenures as Director of Military Intelligence, Adjutant General and in multiple command appointments, he consistently worked to infuse modern thinking, professionalism and organisational strength within the force.
“His service to the nation did not end with retirement,” the Defence Minister said. “As India’s Ambassador to Nepal, he strengthened bilateral ties. As Governor of Assam and Jammu & Kashmir, he worked tirelessly for security, stability and development.”
Urging citizens and soldiers alike to imbibe Lt Gen Sinha’s ideals, he said such values are essential if India is to emerge as a secure, self-reliant and prosperous nation.
CDS Calls Lt Gen Sinha a ‘Soldier-Statesman and Scholar Warrior’
Addressing the gathering, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan described Lt Gen Sinha as a Soldier-Statesman, Scholar Warrior and a man of deep character, whose career offers timeless lessons for today’s Armed Forces.
“Senior leadership must build a culture where professional military education, debate and integrity are valued as much as gallantry,” the CDS said.
“Middle-level officers must invest in their minds as fiercely as they train their bodies.”
Calling upon young officers and other ranks, Gen Chauhan stressed the need to train hard, value discipline, cultivate reflection, lead with firmness and empathy, and remember that courage lies not only in battle, but in moral clarity.
He also urged veterans and the media to safeguard the credibility of the Armed Forces by celebrating ethical conduct, restraint and nation-building efforts during peace, not just victories in war.
Preparing the Indian Soldier for Future Wars
Highlighting the evolving nature of warfare across cyber, space, information and cognitive domains, the CDS emphasised the growing importance of soldier-scholars who can think, analyse and adapt.
“The Indian soldier must combine Lt Gen Sinha’s courage in uniform, curiosity of mind and unwavering commitment to the Constitution,” he said.
“Only then will the soldier not just protect borders and people, but help shape India’s destiny.”
Military Leadership Pays Tribute
The memorial lecture was attended by former Army Chiefs Gen NC Vij, Gen Deepak Kapoor and Gen Dalbir Singh, along with Vice Chief of the Army Staff Lt Gen PP Singh. Around 300 serving and retired Armed Forces personnel, along with members of Lt Gen Sinha’s family, were present at the event.
