CBI heat and SC test: Vijay faces twin legal crucibles in Karur stampede probe & Jana Nayagan Censor battle

CHENNAI, JAN 13

Actor-politician Vijay finds himself at the centre of an unprecedented legal crosscurrent, with the Central Bureau of Investigation summoning him for a second round of questioning in the Karur stampede case even as the Supreme Court prepares to hear a crucial plea over the stalled release of his film Jana Nayagan.

  • Second CBI summons in 41-death Karur tragedy coincides with apex court hearing on stalled film release
  • Actor-politician questioned on crowd control, delayed arrival and abrupt exit as investigators tighten probe
  • Supreme Court to hear producers’ plea against CBFC amid allegations of procedural overreach
  • Legal storm intensifies as political entry, public safety accountability and creative freedom collide
  • January 19 emerges as defining date for Vijay’s political credibility and cinematic swansong

The convergence of criminal investigation and constitutional scrutiny has placed the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leader under intense national spotlight, making January 19 a decisive date in both his political and professional trajectory.

CBI Tightens Net in Karur Stampede Probe

The CBI, acting on a Supreme Court directive, is probing the tragic stampede at a political event in Karur that claimed 41 lives. Vijay was questioned for nearly six hours at the agency’s headquarters in Delhi after arriving on a special flight from Chennai.

According to sources, investigators sought a detailed account of the sequence of events, including crowd management measures, expectations of turnout, awareness of the deteriorating situation at the venue, and the decision to continue addressing the gathering despite visible medical emergencies. The agency also questioned him on his nearly seven-hour delay in reaching the venue and his departure from Karur shortly after the tragedy.

Vijay reportedly told investigators that he left the venue fearing his continued presence could trigger further chaos and compound the situation. The CBI is now in the process of corroborating his statements with testimonies already recorded from other party functionaries and event organisers.

The actor-politician has sought January 19 for his second appearance before the agency, citing Pongal festivities, a request the CBI has reportedly accommodated.

Supreme Court to Hear Jana Nayagan Certification Dispute

Parallel to the criminal probe, Vijay’s latest film Jana Nayagan—touted as his final on-screen appearance—faces an uncertain fate. The Supreme Court is expected to hear a plea filed by KVN Productions against the Central Board of Film Certification over the withholding of the film’s certificate.

The film, scheduled for release on January 9, was stalled after the CBFC referred it to a revising committee despite an initial U/A clearance. A single judge of the Madras High Court had directed the board to grant certification, but the order was swiftly stayed by a division bench on an appeal by the CBFC, pushing the issue to the apex court.

The producers allege arbitrary delay and procedural inconsistency, while the CBFC maintains that its actions fall within regulatory norms. The matter raises larger questions about artistic freedom, regulatory discretion and judicial oversight.

Politics, Public Accountability and the Law

The twin legal battles unfold against the backdrop of Vijay’s recent political foray and his open ideological opposition to the BJP. Observers note that the overlapping timelines of the CBI probe and the censor dispute have fuelled speculation of political undertones, an allegation denied by authorities.

For legal experts, the episode underscores a rare intersection of criminal liability in public event management and constitutional scrutiny of censorship powers—both with far-reaching implications.

A Defining Moment

With the CBI probe probing accountability in a mass casualty event and the Supreme Court poised to rule on the limits of certification authority, Vijay stands at a pivotal juncture. January 19 could well shape not just the outcome of two high-stakes legal proceedings, but also public perception of his transition from cinema icon to political actor.
