NEW DELHI, JAN 15
In an age dominated by instant messages and fleeting digital exchanges, India Post is inviting students to slow down, reflect and rediscover the timeless power of handwritten letters. As part of the Universal Postal Union’s global initiative, India Post will conduct the UPU International Letter Writing Competition for Young People 2026, aimed at reigniting creativity, emotional expression and the enduring art of letter writing among school students.
The theme for 2026—“Write a letter to a friend about why human connection matters in a digital world”—encourages children to explore the value of empathy, friendship and meaningful communication at a time when screens often replace face-to-face interaction.
The competition will be organised across India through all Postal Circles, in close coordination with schools and educational institutions. India Post will promote participation, collect entries and conduct evaluations at Circle and National levels. Winners will be honoured on World Post Day, October 9, celebrating the role of letters in connecting people across generations and borders.
The best national entry from India will represent the country at the international level, where the Universal Postal Union will award Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, certificates and special prizes. The international Gold Medal winner may also earn a visit to the UPU Headquarters in Bern, Switzerland, or an alternative global recognition.
Who Can Participate
The competition is open to students aged 9 to 15 years from recognised schools and institutions. Entries must be submitted as handwritten letters in English or any language listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India, reinforcing linguistic diversity and cultural expression.
Schools are encouraged to conduct the competition internally and forward their selected entries to the respective Postal Circles by March 20, 2026. Postal Circles will then evaluate submissions and send the top three entries to the Directorate by March 31, 2026.
Prizes That Inspire Young Writers
At the Circle Level, winners will receive cash awards and certificates, with the first prize carrying ₹25,000. At the National Level, the top prize goes up to ₹50,000, recognising not just writing skill but depth of thought and originality.
Entry Requirements
Each submission must include essential details on the first page, in both English and Hindi, including the student’s photograph, personal information, school details and full postal address, ensuring transparency and smooth evaluation.
India Post has urged students, parents and schools to reach out to their respective postal authorities for guidance and participation details. Comprehensive information is also available on the Department of Posts website.
By encouraging children to put pen to paper, the initiative seeks to nurture thoughtful communication, patience and emotional intelligence—values that remain as relevant today as ever.
