MUMBAI, JAN 22

In a country where breast cancer continues to silently claim lives, Sanjeevani: United Against Cancer has launched one of the most intimate, women-first health awareness initiatives India has seen. Titled ‘The Pink Tag Project’, the campaign turns a woman’s most private daily moment—getting dressed—into a powerful reminder that self-care is not indulgence, it is survival.

Launched as part of the third edition of Sanjeevani, an initiative by the Federal Bank Hormis Memorial Foundation, News18 Network, and knowledge partner Tata Trusts, the Pink Tag Project reimagines health communication by meeting women where they actually are, rather than where campaigns usually expect them to be.

A Stark Reality That Demands a New Language of Awareness

In India, every four minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, and every eight minute, one loses her life. Yet in small towns and villages, awareness remains alarmingly low. Conversations around breast health are hushed, often weighed down by stigma, fear, and social discomfort.

For millions of women juggling homes, work, children and elders, their own health is routinely postponed—noticed only when a crisis erupts. Sanjeevani’s Pink Tag Project confronts this silence with empathy, not alarm.

A Tag That Tugs at Conscience, Gently

Born from a powerful behavioural insight, the Pink Tag Project introduces a small pink fabric tag, stitched discreetly inside blouses, kurtas and innerwear—right next to the wash-care label. Printed on it are simple instructions for breast self-examination.

It is a reminder placed exactly where a woman is alone, unhurried, and focused on herself. Not a seminar. Not a poster. Not a loud campaign. Just a whisper woven into daily life.

Stitching Awareness, One Garment at a Time

The initiative is documented in a moving short film, narrated by acclaimed actor Sheeba Chaddha, capturing women in their everyday rhythms—drawing water, sweeping courtyards, preparing meals, dressing for the day.

Then comes the moment of discovery. The Pink Tag. Women pause. They read. They ask. Local women volunteers, trained and trusted, step in to explain. Conversations spark within families—daughters show mothers, granddaughters remind grandmothers. What begins as curiosity quietly grows into collective consciousness.

Voices Behind the Vision

Explaining the philosophy behind the initiative, M V S Murthy, Chief Marketing Officer, Federal Bank, said: “At Federal Bank Hormis Memorial Foundation, we believe that real change doesn’t come from heightened campaigns. It comes from interventions that whisper, consistently, intimately, and with empathy. The Pink Tag Project is a testament to the power of behavioral design. By partnering with local tailors and volunteers, we’ve turned a simple garment into a life-saving tool. This is not charity — this is empowerment.”

He added: “When self-care becomes routine, survival becomes possible. The Pink Tag Project underlines the consistency of our approach to communities — always for a reason, consistent and long term.”

Echoing this, Sidharth Saini, COO, News18 Studios, said: “At Network18, reach matters, but participation matters more. Our cause work is rooted in real human insight. The Pink Tag Project turns a small design gesture into a sustained reminder for early breast cancer detection. It is not disruptive; it is lived.”

“When communities engage with a message every day, change doesn’t demand attention — it becomes habit.”

Surojit Sen, Co-founder and CEO, Huddlers Innovation Private Limited, highlighted the behavioural breakthrough: “Nobody has time to go for a screening, let alone women who barely manage time for their own wellbeing. That’s when we identified the one moment they are alone and focused on themselves — while dressing.”

“The Pink Tag Project isn’t just a campaign; it’s a behavioral change effort presented as a simple garment tag. The response has been overwhelming because it’s real, relevant, and woven into their lives — literally.”

The Behavioural Shift That Saves Lives

The Pink Tag Project drives three crucial shifts:

  • Normalising the conversation: The tag opens dialogue in a non-threatening way, with community volunteers making breast health discussions safe and relatable.
  • Embedding early detection into routine: Seen daily, the reminder transforms awareness into habit.
  • Empowering women with agency: It equips women to act immediately—no appointments, no equipment, no cost—just awareness and action.

A Campaign That Respects Women’s Reality

What sets the Pink Tag Project apart is its respect for women’s time, privacy and lived realities. It does not demand attention; it earns trust. It does not interrupt lives; it integrates into them.

The film is available across Sanjeevani’s digital platforms, News18 Network’s broadcast channels, and select streaming platforms.
