Maha Shivaratri, one of the most sacred festivals dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva, holds profound spiritual significance for devotees across the country. Every devotee wishes to have darshan of the holy Jyotirlinga and receive divine blessings through prasad. Recognising that many devotees are unable to undertake pilgrimage journeys, the Department of Posts has enabled a unique service to ensure that faith reaches every home.

Through the Speed Post service, devotees can now receive prasad from Shri Somnath Temple in Gujarat and Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi directly at their doorstep, anywhere in the country, said Krishna Kumar Yadav, Postmaster General of the North Gujarat Region.
“Maha Shivaratri holds special significance for the worship of Lord Shiva. Everyone wishes that he can have a glimpse of the Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva and get blessings through prasad. However, some devotees are unable to visit the temples despite their wishes. Now, such devotees need not be disappointed,” said Krishna Kumar Yadav.
Adding to the spiritual offerings, Post Offices will also provide a 250 ml bottle of Gangajal for just ₹30 during Maha Shivaratri, enabling devotees to perform sacred rituals at home.
Shri Somnath Prasad Through Speed Post
Krishna Kumar Yadav said that the Shri Somnath Trust has signed an agreement with the Department of Posts to deliver prasad to devotees across the nation.

“Under this agreement, any devotee can send an e-Money Order of ₹270 to the Manager, Shri Somnath Trust, Prabhas Patan, District Junagadh, Gujarat–362268, marked as ‘Booking for Prasad’,” he said.
Upon receipt of the e-Money Order, the Shri Somnath Trust will dispatch a 400-gram prasad packet via Speed Post. The packet includes:
- 200 grams of Magas laddoo
- 100 grams of Sesame chikki
- 100 grams of Peanut chikki
Sacred Kashi Vishwanath Prasad Reaches Every Devotee
The prasad of Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple is also being made available nationwide through Speed Post.
For this, devotees need to send an e-Money Order of ₹251 in the name of Senior Superintendent Post Office, Varanasi (East) Division–221001. Once the e-Money Order is received, the prasad is dispatched to the devotee’s address.
Explaining the contents, Indian Postal Service officer Krishna Kumar Yadav said that the prasad package includes:
- Image of Shri Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga
- Maha Mrityunjay Yantra
- Shri Shiv Chalisa
- 108-bead Rudraksh garland

Tracking Divine Blessings Digitally
The Department of Posts has also ensured that devotees receive Speed Post tracking details via SMS. For this, it is mandatory to clearly mention the complete address, PIN code, and mobile number while sending the e-Money Order.
This initiative beautifully blends devotion, trust, and public service, allowing millions of devotees to celebrate Maha Shivaratri with sacred blessings from India’s holiest Jyotirlingas—without stepping out of their homes.
