GUWAHATI, FEB 23
In a transformative boost to India’s aviation frontier, the new terminal at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) commenced commercial operations this evening, elevating annual passenger handling capacity to 13.1 million and cementing Guwahati’s stature as the principal air gateway connecting the Northeast to mainland India, South Asia and Southeast Asia.
The terminal became operational in record time following a carefully sequenced, operations-led transition. Comprehensive live trials were conducted across check-in systems, baggage handling, security protocols and aircraft turnaround operations, ensuring seamless readiness before full-scale deployment. The facility was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 20, 2025.
The operational launch ceremony was attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Jeet Adani, Director of Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL), India’s largest private airport operator. The milestone was marked by the issuance of a ceremonial boarding pass to the first departing passenger and the arrival of an Akasa Air flight from Mumbai at the new terminal. Traditional lamp lighting and vibrant cultural performances involving artisan communities, tea garden workers, frontline staff and Central Industrial Security Force personnel showcased the region’s rich heritage alongside infrastructure advancement.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “I express my gratitude and we are thankful to Gautam Adani for keeping his commitment of investing Rs 50,000 crore made during Advantage Assam 2.0, last year. I believe with the operationalisation of this new Terminal, Assam’s tourism will get a boost. It will be a gamechanger for Assam. The culture of Assam has been respected during the construction of this new airport terminal, and as Assamese, we are proud of it.”
Jeet Adani underscored the broader significance of the expansion. “Today is more than a commercial milestone. It is a proud moment for the people of Assam and the North-East. This achievement belongs to the countless hands and hearts that turned vision into reality. It resonates with the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision for future-ready infrastructure and with the Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma’s mission to position Assam as the economic engine of the North-East.”
Traffic Growth and National Positioning
Guwahati has emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing non-metro aviation hubs, with passenger throughput surpassing nine million in recent years and consistently ranking among the country’s top 10 to 12 busiest airports. The expanded 13.1 million passenger capacity unlocks significant headroom for route expansion, increased flight frequencies and deeper international connectivity.
The airport currently connects 21 domestic destinations and three international routes, including Bangkok, Paro and Singapore, and handles more than 130 aircraft traffic movements daily. The enhanced infrastructure is expected to strengthen Guwahati’s emergence as a strategic aviation bridge linking the Northeast with India’s economic centres and Southeast Asia’s growth corridors.
Advanced system validation exercises ensured operational resilience, covering airline coordination, ground handling synchronisation, emergency preparedness and digital integration. The terminal is equipped with Digi Yatra-enabled passenger processing, integrated digital wayfinding and centralised communication systems, while retail and hospitality services are being progressively introduced.
Architecture and Cultural Identity Take Flight
Designed by acclaimed Indian architect Nuru Karim, the terminal embodies a rare fusion of modern aviation infrastructure and indigenous cultural storytelling. Inspired by Assam’s kopou phool (foxtail orchid), the architectural design incorporates more than 140 metric tonnes of bamboo, reflecting sustainable engineering rooted in regional tradition.
Structural references to Assam’s bholuka bamboo craftsmanship and bamboo traditions associated with the Apatani tribe of Arunachal Pradesh bring the Northeast’s cultural ethos into the terminal’s physical form. A sweeping vaulted roof enhances spatial openness and natural light, while an amphitheatre-style arrivals forecourt immerses passengers in the region’s artistic and performance heritage.
The terminal’s design excellence was recognised with the International Architecture Award 2025, underscoring its success in blending cultural authenticity with global infrastructure standards.
Operated by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd through its subsidiary Guwahati International Airport Limited, the airport forms part of a nationwide network including major aviation hubs in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Jaipur, Mangaluru and Thiruvananthapuram.
With expanded capacity, cultural symbolism and future-ready systems converging, Guwahati’s new aviation gateway signals not just infrastructure growth — but the Northeast’s decisive ascent into the global aviation mainstream.
