CHENNAI, MAR 23:
GEM Hospital, India’s premier gastroenterology and laparoscopic speciality hospital, has announced a series of initiatives to mark Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, focusing on early detection and public awareness of colorectal cancer.
- Marks Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month with statewide preventive push
- Free screening initiative targets early detection among government pensioners
- Experts warn of rising India burden with late-stage diagnosis trends
- Felicitation of cancer warriors underscores survival through timely care
- Awareness sessions decode risks, symptoms, and life-saving screening protocols
The programme features a Free Colorectal Screening initiative for Tamil Nadu Government Pensioners, alongside a Felicitation Ceremony honouring Colorectal Cancer Warriors, and an expert-led awareness session aimed at educating the public.
The screening initiative was inaugurated by Dr Marudhu Pandian, Retired Dean, Madurai Rajaji Government Medical College Hospital and also sitting president of the prestigious The Association of Surgeons of India in the presence of Dr P Senthilnathan, Director, GEM Hospital, Dr S Asokan, CEO, GEM Hospital, Dr Pinak Das Gupta, Chief Colorectal Surgery, GEM Hospital and warriors of colorectal cancer.
Highlighting the objective of the initiative, Dr. P. Senthilnathan, Director, GEM Hospital said, “Through this initiative, we aim to make preventive healthcare more accessible to Tamil Nadu Government Pensioners, who may otherwise delay or avoid screening. Early diagnosis not only improves survival rates but also reduces the complexity and cost of treatment. Even simple tests like colonoscopy can detect precancerous polyps and prevent cancer altogether”.
Colorectal cancer is emerging as a significant health concern in India. According to global cancer data (GLOBOCAN 2022), the country reports nearly 65,000 new cases and around 38,000 deaths annually. The rising incidence is linked to urban lifestyles, dietary patterns, and ageing populations, with a concerning number of cases detected at advanced stages.
The awareness sessions will focus on key risk factors such as sedentary lifestyle, obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption, and low-fiber diets. Participants will also be educated on early warning signs including changes in bowel habits, rectal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, and persistent abdominal discomfort.
Emphasising the importance of timely screening, Dr. Pinak Dasgupta, Chief Colorectal Surgeon, GEM Hospital said, “Colorectal cancer is largely preventable and highly treatable when detected early. However, in India, nearly 60–70% of patients present in advanced stages due to lack of awareness and screening. Regular screening, especially for individuals above 45 years or those with risk factors, can dramatically reduce both incidence and mortality.”
As part of the observance, GEM Hospital also hosted a felicitation programme recognising colorectal cancer survivors, celebrating their resilience while reinforcing the importance of early detection and timely intervention.
In a statement Dr. C. Palanivelu, Founder & Chairman, GEM Hospitals said, “Colorectal cancer is now the 4th most common cancer in India across both sexes. It is both preventable and treatable when identified early. With advancements in minimally invasive and robotic surgery, we are able to offer patients faster recovery, reduced complications, and better quality of life. However, the key lies in timely diagnosis, which can only be achieved through regular screening and awareness.”
“At GEM Hospital, our approach integrates clinical excellence with compassionate care. Recognising cancer survivors, is not only a tribute to their strength but also a powerful reminder that colorectal cancer can be successfully treated when diagnosed early”, he further added.
Through this initiative, GEM Hospital continues to strengthen its commitment to preventive healthcare, community outreach, and advancing world-class gastrointestinal and cancer care.
