CHENNAI, MAR 28

In a massive early setback for the Chennai Super Kings, talismanic icon MS Dhoni is set to miss the opening stretch of TATA IPL 2026 after being diagnosed with a calf strain, casting a shadow over the franchise’s campaign launch.

“MS Dhoni is currently undergoing rehabilitation for a calf strain. As a result, he is likely to miss the first two weeks of TATA IPL 2026.”

The official statement confirms that the 44-year-old wicketkeeper-batter will be unavailable for at least the first fortnight, including key early fixtures that could shape CSK’s momentum.

Early Blow for CSK’s Campaign

The absence of Dhoni — a five-time IPL-winning leader and one of the league’s most influential figures — comes as a strategic and emotional setback. CSK will begin their campaign against Rajasthan Royals without their seasoned finisher and mentor figure.

Reports suggest Dhoni could miss at least four matches, placing immediate pressure on the team’s balance, particularly in leadership and end-game execution.

Leadership Void & Tactical Shift

Though he stepped down from captaincy earlier, Dhoni’s on-field presence remains central to CSK’s tactical core. His absence opens the door for alternate wicketkeeping and leadership combinations, with the team expected to lean on its revamped squad depth.

The franchise, which has recently restructured its roster, may now accelerate transition plans as it navigates the initial phase without its most experienced campaigner.

Fitness Concerns Resurface

Dhoni’s injury also revives ongoing discussions about fitness management for veteran players in high-intensity T20 leagues. The star cricketer, who has battled fitness issues in recent seasons, is currently under rehabilitation with no exact return timeline confirmed.

Season Hinges on Comeback

While CSK fans will anxiously await Dhoni’s return, the opening weeks could define the team’s trajectory. A strong start in his absence could stabilise the campaign, while early stumbles may amplify the impact of losing their iconic finisher.

For now, IPL 2026 begins with a rare sight — CSK without Dhoni at the helm on the field, a scenario that will test the franchise’s resilience like never before.
