The Madras High Court on Monday expressed concern over alleged inconsistencies in the asset declarations filed by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor-turned-politician Vijay in connection with the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

A bench comprising Chief Justice S.A. Dharmadhikari and Justice G. Arul Murugan issued notices on a plea seeking an investigation into the alleged discrepancies.
Court Issues Notice to Income Tax Department, Election Commission & Returning Officers
The notices were issued to the Director General of Income Tax (Investigation), the Election Commission of India, and the Returning Officers of Perambur and Trichy East constituencies, where Vijay is contesting.
The petition was filed by V. Vignesh, a resident of Perambur, alleging significant inconsistencies in declared asset values across constituencies.
Allegation of ₹100 Crore+ Undisclosed Assets Raises Judicial Concern
During oral observations, the bench reportedly noted: “This is an irregularity. More than Rs 100 crores has not been disclosed in one constituency,” as reported by LiveLaw.
The court’s remark came in response to claims of variation in declared immovable assets between two separate election affidavits.
Contradictions Alleged in Asset Declarations Across Constituencies
As per the petition, Vijay reportedly declared immovable assets of ₹115.13 crore in Perambur, while stating ₹220.15 crore in the Trichy (East) affidavit.
His total declared net worth was stated at approximately ₹620 crore, with reported income of ₹184.53 crore for FY 2024–25, derived from self-employment, interest, and rental sources.
Movable assets reportedly include over ₹213 crore in bank deposits, along with luxury vehicles such as BMW 530, Lexus, Toyota Vellfire, and BMW i7, besides gold and silver holdings.
Past Tax Dispute Also Cited; ₹1.5 Crore Penalty Upheld
The High Court’s scrutiny comes months after it upheld an Income Tax Department penalty of ₹1.5 crore imposed on Vijay for allegedly failing to disclose ₹15 crore income from the film Puli (FY 2015–16).
