As the snow begins to melt and the Himalayas echo with chants of devotion, the sacred portals of Kedarnath Temple are set to open on Wednesday, inviting millions of devotees into a realm where faith meets eternity.

With the opening of Badrinath Temple on April 23, the spiritually transformative Char Dham Yatra 2026 will be in full motion—marking one of India’s most revered pilgrimages.

The yatra had already commenced on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, when the sacred shrines of Gangotri Temple and Yamunotri Temple opened after a six-month winter pause.
A journey beyond the physical
Set amidst towering Himalayan peaks, flowing rivers, and divine silence, the Char Dham Yatra is not merely a journey across geography—it is a pilgrimage within.
Traditionally undertaken in a sacred sequence—Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath—the yatra represents purification, devotion, and ultimate surrender.

Rituals rooted in eternity
The opening of Kedarnath Temple is steeped in timeless tradition. The date is determined at Omkareshwar Temple on the sacred occasion of Maha Shivratri.
A day before the opening, the revered Kedarnath Doli (palanquin) journeys from Gaurikund to the temple—covering a spiritually demanding 16-km trek.
Amid Vedic chants and sacred rituals, the doors open, revealing the divine presence of Bhagwan Kedarnath to eager devotees.
“In the silence of the mountains, one hears the voice of the Divine most clearly,” echo the ancient scriptures.
Faith meets preparedness
With lakhs of pilgrims expected from across India and abroad, authorities have ensured robust arrangements for a smooth and secure yatra.
From healthcare and sanitation to traffic management and accommodation, every detail has been streamlined. Police forces and SDRF teams are deployed across key routes, with helplines and control rooms activated for real-time assistance.
Both online and offline registrations are in place to manage the influx and ensure an orderly pilgrimage.
A divine confluence of nature and spirit
Each dham—Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath—stands as a beacon of faith, surrounded by snow-clad peaks and sacred rivers that have witnessed centuries of devotion.
