AHMEDABAD, MAY 1
A decisive shift is underway in Gujarat’s health insurance landscape, with customers increasingly opting for ₹15 lakh and above sum insured policies, reflecting heightened awareness and preparedness amid rising healthcare costs, according to TATA AIG General Insurance.
The trend signals a more informed consumer base prioritising comprehensive financial protection, while also embracing flexible and customisable insurance solutions tailored to individual needs.
Younger Buyers, Smarter Choices
Over the past three years, the insurer has recorded an 8–10% rise in customers under 35, driven by early adoption incentives and products designed for younger demographics. This shift indicates that health insurance is no longer a late-life decision but an early financial planning priority.
Customer preferences are also evolving rapidly, with a growing tilt towards simplified, essential-feature-driven plans rather than overly complex coverage structures—highlighting a practical, value-focused mindset.
Expert Insight
Dr. Santosh Puri, Head – Retail Health Underwriting, TATA AIG General Insurance, said: “We are seeing a clear shift in Gujarat towards customers opting for higher sum insured and more thoughtful health insurance choices. Customers are increasingly prioritising adequate coverage and flexibility, while also entering the insurance ecosystem at a younger age. These trends reflect a more informed and proactive approach to financial protection, and we remain focused on offering solutions that align with these evolving needs.”
Claims Trend Raises Red Flag
Gujarat contributes 6–8% to TATA AIG’s overall health portfolio, making it a key market. However, the state also reports ~18–20% higher claims incidence compared to the national average.
This surge is largely driven by infectious diseases such as dengue, fever, acute gastroenteritis (AGE), and typhoid, reinforcing the importance of adequate coverage and timely preparedness among policyholders.
Strong Distribution Backbone
The region continues to be agency-driven, with customers relying heavily on advisor-led decisions. TATA AIG has built a strong on-ground presence with:
- 2,326 agents
- 25 branches across Gujarat, including Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Gandhinagar, and Vadodara
This extensive network ensures deeper penetration and personalised guidance for customers navigating health insurance choices.
The Big Picture
Gujarat’s evolving health insurance trends reflect a shift from reactive buying to proactive protection, where higher coverage, early entry, and tailored plans are becoming the norm. With rising health risks and costs, the focus is clearly on future-ready financial security.
