The complex operation involved the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker MT Olympic Life, which was sailing from Fujairah, UAE, to Kochi when it reported an explosion in its hull while off the coast of Oman on May 26, 2026. The vessel subsequently detected the presence of unexploded ordnance as it continued its voyage towards Kochi.
- High-risk Explosive Ordnance Disposal operation averts a potential maritime catastrophe after projectile penetrates fuel tank of Marshall Islands-flagged tanker
- Specialist team from Southern Naval Command executes painstaking extraction following advanced diagnostics and multi-layered safety protocols
- Operation reinforces Indian Navy’s status as a trusted regional security partner, responding swiftly to maritime emergencies irrespective of nationality or ownership
Upon receiving the alert through the Information Fusion Centre–Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR), the Indian Navy launched a coordinated emergency response.
The Southern Naval Command, based in Kochi, immediately deployed a specialist Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team to assess the situation. Detailed inspection revealed that the projectile had pierced the ship’s hull, passed through multiple structural compartments and ultimately become lodged inside a fuel storage tank, significantly elevating the operational risk.
Given the presence of an unexploded missile warhead within a fuel compartment, naval experts adopted a meticulously planned, phased strategy designed to safeguard the vessel, its crew and surrounding port infrastructure from any accidental detonation.
After implementing stringent safety protocols, the EOD specialists employed advanced diagnostic techniques to identify and isolate the weapon’s detonation mechanism before carrying out the delicate extraction of the warhead along with associated debris.
The recovered ordnance has since been transported to a secure facility for safe storage and detailed technical examination.
The meticulously executed operation, conducted over an extended period under highly challenging conditions, highlights the Indian Navy’s growing expertise in explosive ordnance disposal, specialised engineering capabilities and seamless inter-agency coordination in managing complex maritime emergencies.
In an official statement, the Indian Navy said: “The Indian Navy’s prompt response, to an emergency at sea, irrespective of the nationality of the crew or the ownership of MT Olympic Life, reaffirms its role as a responsible maritime force dedicated to global maritime safety and a trusted and preferred security partner in the region.”
The successful mission once again underscores India’s expanding role as a net security provider in the Indian Ocean Region, demonstrating its capability to respond swiftly and professionally to high-risk contingencies that threaten maritime commerce, environmental safety and regional stability.
